WORD PROCESSING IN MS
WORD®
INTRODUCTION
Do more with your documents at Northwest Missouri State University: pop in an
online video, open a PDF and edit the content, align pictures and diagrams with minimal
fuss. The new read mode is clean and distraction-free and it works great on tablets.
Teaming-up is better too, with direct connections to your online spaces and streamlined
review features like Simple Markup and comments. To get started creating your first
Word document, perform some basic tasks in Word 2013. Enjoy reading and get absorbed
in Word documents right from your screen with a new clean, comfortable reading view.
The view displays your documents in easy-to-read columns on the screen.
Work together with others with streamlined collaboration tools.
Save and share files in the cloud. The cloud is like file storage in the sky. You can get to it
anytime you’re online. Now it’s easy to share a document using SharePoint or OneDrive.
From there you can access and share your Word docs, Excel spreadsheets, and other Office
files. You can even work together with your colleagues on the same file at the same time.
Markups are simple to complete. A new revision view, Simple Markup, provides a clean,
uncomplicated view of your document, but you still see indicators where tracked changes
have been made.
Creating Videos
Videos found at Northwest Missouri State University provide a powerful way to
help you prove your point. When you click Online Video, you can paste in the embed code
for the video you want to add. You can also type a keyword to search online for the video
that best fits your document. If the Online Video button appears grayed out, make sure
you’re not in Compatibility Mode. You know you’re in Compatibility Mode if
[Compatibility Mode] appears after the document name in the title bar at the top of the
Word window.
To convert the document, click file, info, and then convert. To learn more about
Compatibility Mode use Word 2013 to open documents created in earlier versions of
Word. If you want to add videos from YouTube and you don’t see it as an option, click the
YouTube button at the bottom of the Insert Video window. If you don’t see a YouTube
icon, make sure you’re signed in to Office 2013.
Headers and Footers
To make your document look professionally produced,
Word provides header, footer, cover page, and text box designs that

complement each other. For example, you can add a matching cover page, header, and
sidebar. Click Insert and then choose the elements you want from the different galleries. If
you already have a header or footer in your document and want to add page numbers
without losing any information in your header or footer, use the Page field code. If you
don't have an existing header or a footer, go to Add page numbers to learn how to insert
page numbers using the style gallery.
Using the page field code to insert page numbers can be complicated. As a tip, you
might find it helpful to view not only the contents of your header or footer area, but also
the formatting marks in those areas. On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, choose
Show/Hide to turn on the display of formatting marks. Choose the button again to turn off
the display. To change where and how your page number appears is simple. After you add
page numbers, you can change where they appear on the page, and how they look. In your
header or footer area, select the page number, choose Insert Alignment Tab, and under
Alignment, make a different selection. In the header and footer group, choose page
number, then current position. Select a style in the gallery for the page number.
Themes
Themes and styles also help keep your document coordinated. When you click
Design and choose a new Theme, the pictures, charts, and SmartArt graphics change to
match your new theme. When you apply styles, your headings change to match the new
theme. To create your own color theme go to the Design tab in Word, click Colors, and
then click Customize Colors. Click the button next to the theme color you want to change
and then pick a color under Theme Colors.
To return to the default theme, choose the Office theme. To switch or remove a
theme simply pick a different theme from the Themes menu. To remove theme formatting
from just a portion of your document, select the portion you want to change and change
any formatting you like, such as font style, font size, color, etc. Once you’ve made changes
to your theme, you can save it to use again. Or you can make it the default for new
documents. On the Page Layout tab in Excel or the Design tab in Word, click Themes,
save current theme. In the File name box, enter a name for the theme, and click Save.

Videos Met Desired Results
Save time in Word with new buttons that show up where you need them. To
change the way a picture fits in your document, click it and a button for layout options
appears next to it. When you work on a table, click where you want to add a row or a

column, and then click the plus sign. Reading is easier, too, in the new Reading view. You
can collapse parts of the document and focus on the text you want.
Read Mode automatically fits the page layout to your device, using columns and
larger font sizes, both of which you can adjust. Common reading tools are built in: Add
comments, define and translate words, copy or highlight text, and search Bing. Zoom in
and out on images and other objects, expand or collapse sections, or watch embedded
videos. Adjust columns, page color, and layout. Open the Navigation Pane to quickly move
around in the document.
