- GUMBALL FUNCTIONS
Colour coded with respect to world axes; red – x axis; green – y axis; blue – z axis
1. Moving – arrow keys
2. Scaling – colour coded dots – for uniform scaling hold down to shift
3. Rotate – semi-circular arcs
4. Extrusion – colour dots within the arrows
- LAYERS TAB
1. Works very similar to AutoCAD
2. TO CHANGE LAYERS – select object – go to properties tab – layer drop down button
1.2. 2D LINE DRAFTING
Most AutoCAD drafting commands works very similar in rhino as well. Some common examples used in class:
- Line
- Rectangle
- Circle
- angled line
- extend
- join
- explode
- mirror
- offset
- match properties
- divide
- fillet
- chamfer
- distance
- angle
- move
- copy
- rotate
EDITTING COMMANDS
For curves and surfaces
- join
- trim
- split
1.3. SOLID MODELLING
SOLID CREATION METHODS
- Curve drafting – planarsrf – extrude srf
- Curve drafting – extrude crv
- Using primitive solids like box, cylinder, sphere etc..
BOOLEAN OPERATIONS
- Boolean union ; combines 2 solids
- Boolean difference ; subtracts solid A from B
- Boolean split ; splits a solid
ARRAY FUNCTIONS
- Array linear
- Array polar
- Array crv
1.4. CURVE DRAFTING – CREATING , REBUILDING AND EDITING
CREATION METHODS
- Line – rebuild – increase degree to 3
- Control point curve
- Interpolate curve
EDITING COMMANDS
- Insert control point
- Delete control point
- Continue curve
- Blend crv
OTHER GENERAL COMMANDS
- Hide
- show
- invert
- block
- group
- ungroup
- Dupedge
- scale1D
- scale
- zoom
- ZS
FLUIDIC SURFACE MODELLING
2.1. FLUIDIC SURFACE CREATION
Method 1: rebuilding a planarsrf to degree 3 – and manipulating its control points
Method 2: using any of the following surface commands
Planarsrf – for closed and planar curves
Patch – for closed curves even when non planar; preferably avoid this command
Extrude crv – for extruded wall like singly curves surfaces
Sweep 1 – one rail and cross sections
Sweep 2 – two rails and cross sections
Networksrf – requires edge curves – cross sections – clean UV directions for all curves used in this command
Loft – multiple curves that are not intersecting
Revolve – for radial symmetrical surfaces – requires a cross section and axis of revolution
Pipe – 2 variations possible with uniform and varying radius
2.2. Controlled surface manipulation/ morphing
1. Twist – to twist an object – can be curves or surface or solids
2. Bend – to bend any object
3. Contour – slices a solid into planar curves – always make sure the result is closed planar non- intersecting curves
4. Flow along srf – morphs an object onto a surface – requires an object to morph, base surface around it and a target
surface to morph onto
5. Cage edit – manipulates a solid with a boundary cage
2.3. Surface edit operations
1. Join – split – trim
2. Blend srf
3. Fillet edge
OTHER GENERAL COMMANDS
- record history
- setpt ; to flatten a geometry
- extract isocurve
- offsetsrf ; to give thickness
- offset crv on srf ; to offset a curve on a base surface
- namedview ; to set scenes
- -viewcapturetofile ; to export HD images
SELECTION COMMANDS
- selcrv ; for curves
- selsrf ; for surfaces
- selpolysrf ; for polysurfaces
- selUV ; to select an entire row of U and V points on a surface
ADVANCED FLUIDIC SURFACE MODELLING
3.1. SURFACE ANALYSIS AND ERROR CORRECTION
1. Environmental map : best used to analyse dents in surfaces
- Menu bar – analyse – surface – environment map
2. Zebra analysis ; Best used to analyse surface continuity when creating an object with multiple surface commands
1. Menu bar – analyse – surface – environment map
3. Match srf – helps adjust the surface continuity between 2 adjacent edges of surfaces
3.2. CURVE AND SURFACE BLENDING
For curves,
1. Blendcrv – to blend 2 curves
2. Fillet
3. Crv2view – to create 3d curves from plan and elevation curves
For surfaces,
1. Blend srf – to blend 2 independent surfaces
2. Fillet edge – fillet the surface edge of a polysurface with a single or varying radius
3. Blend edge – very similar to fillet edge
3.3. 3D MODELS FROM SKETCHES
1. Picture – command used to import drawing
2. When you have multiple drawings like plans, sections, elevations etc… check for the following
2. The scale is same
3. The plane is correct ie. Horizontal or vertical
4. Ground level is in the same level
ADDITIONAL POINTERS TO BE NOTED
1. RECTIFYING POOR SURFACES (the crinkled surfaces in rendered mode)
- Recreating the surfaces with a command that allows you to use more crossections.
- Extract wireframe – recreate using network srf
2. LOFT COMMAND – rebuild the curves with high and equal number of control points for all
curves involved
