Group One
a) With explicit illustrations, explain what is meant by the following terms.

b) Find the range and the domain of the squaring function 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2

c) Discuss clearly the domain of the function 𝑔(𝑥) = 2𝑥+4 and show the interval where the
function is bounded.
d) Design a rectangular holding pen for animals. To save materials use an existing wall as
one of its sides. The fence for the three sides costs $5 per metre and you must spend $1
per metre to paint the portion of the wall that forms the forth side of the pen. Given a
total of $180 to spend on the project, what dimensions will maximize the area of the pen.

i) Sketch the two curves.

Group Six
a) A tractor stuck in the mud is being pulled out by two trucks. One truck applies a force
of 1,200 pounds, and the other truck applies a force of 1,700 pounds. The angle
between the forces applied by the two trucks is 72º. Find the magnitude of the
resultant force, to the nearest pound
b) Relative to a fixed origin O , the points A and B have respective position vectors

i. Find a vector equation of the straight line 𝑙1 which passes through A and B .

where µ is a scalar parameter. And the point C is the point of intersection between

Find the position vector of C. Hence show that C is the midpoint of AB.
c) A is the point (15, 15) and O is the point (0, 0). The vector OA can be written in the
form cp + dq, where c and d are scalars. Using part (a)(i), or otherwise, find the values
of c and d
d) A is the point (2, 3) and B is the point (-2, 0).
