Google Maps is a web service

navigation app, for local
navigation and routing
Brief History:
The brothers, Lars Rasmussen and
Jens Eilstrup Rasmussen
co-founded a mapping start-up,
Where 2 Technologies, which was
acquired by Google in October of
2004
And on Feb 8, 2005, Google Maps
was first launched for desktop as a
new solution to help people “get
from point A to point B.”
How do you use Google Maps?
1
You can access Google
Maps on a computer by
visiting
www.google.com/maps in
a web browser. However,
Google Maps in a web
browser doesn't have the
ability to track your
location or give you
turn-by-turn directions.
2
Type an address or
name of a place in the
search bar. The
search bar is at the
top of the screen on
smartphones and
tablets, and in the
upper-left corner in a
desktop web browser.
Type an address or
landmark name into
the search bar. This
displays a list of
search results below
the search bar.
2
For example, if you want to
find 123 Main Street in
Appleton, California, you'd
type exactly that into the
search bar: 123 Main Street,
Appleton, CA. Add the zip
code if you know, it can help
Google Maps find the place
you're looking for, but you
often won't need it.
3
Tap a location in the
search results. This
marks the location on
the map using a red
map maker icon.
4
Tap Directions. It's the
blue button at the
bottom of the screen.
This displays a line on
the map that
highlights the route to
the location you
searched for. The
color of the line
indicates traffic
conditions.

How does Google Earth differentiate
from Google Maps in navigation,
historical imagery and 3D Models?
Navigation

Google Earth isn’t designed to help you navigate

from place to place. Instead, it’s more for exploring
the world on a broader scale.
Whereas Google Maps is specifically designed for
navigation giving you turn-by-turn, voice-guided
routing. By leveraging real-time traffic information,
you always get the fastest route to your destination
and you can use it for real-time updates on public
trans
Historical Imagery

Google Earth has over 24 million satellite

photos from the past 37 years. Overall, it gives
you 20+ zoom levels in Google Earth
Although Google Maps has satellite imagery
built into its platform, you don’t get as much
choice for which slice of time you want to view.
3D Models

When you zoom into any metropolitan

area, both Google Earth and Google Maps
display a mix of hyper-realistic textured
buildings and 3D models, but
Google Earth adds a bit more viewing
versatility such as tilting and planning
