Learner’s Comments
1. What do you feel you are doing well in your field placement? How is this similar or
different from the feedback you received from your supervisor?
I believe I do well at creating a safe and nurturing environment for the children in
my care. I also make sure to provide plenty of opportunities for play and learning, and I
communicate effectively with both the children and their parents. My supervisor stated
that I document everything that happens, with the children, as well as plan out the
activities beforehand.
2. What were the areas of growth identified by your supervisor? How will you work with
your agency to demonstrate this growth?
I've realized that I could do a better job of communicating with parents.
Sometimes I get so caught up in taking care of the children that I forget to update the
parents on how their child's day is going. I would like to work with the daycare to
establish more regular communication channels with parents, whether that's through
email updates or face-to-face conversations.
3. How did your supervisor’s answers align with what you are learning in your coursework?
What are some differences?
I found that my supervisor's answers aligned very closely with what I'm learning in my
coursework. For example, we both emphasized the importance of creating a safe and
supportive environment for children, and of providing plenty of opportunities for play and
learning. One difference, however, is that my supervisor has a lot of practical experience
working with children, so she was able to provide some real-life examples of how she
puts these principles into practice.
End of Term Reflection
1. How does Flight – The Alberta Early Learning and Curriculum Framework
support us in our work with children? (One paragraph)
Flight - The Alberta Early Learning and Curriculum Framework is a valuable
resource that supports early childhood educators in their work with children. Flight
provides a comprehensive set of guidelines and best practices for creating
engaging and effective learning experiences for young children. It includes clear
learning outcomes and indicators for each developmental domain, as well as
guidance on how to support children with diverse learning needs. By using Flight,
educators can ensure that their work with children is developmentally appropriate,
culturally responsive, and aligned with the latest research in early childhood
education. Overall, Flight is a valuable tool for supporting high-quality early
learning experiences and promoting positive outcomes for children in Alberta.
2. How did observing the Dispositions in Learning help you build relationships with
the children in your care? (One paragraph)
Observing the dispositions in learning, which are the habits of mind that
support children's learning and development, has helped me build stronger
relationships with the children in my care. By paying attention to the children's
natural inclinations and strengths, I can better understand their individual learning
styles and tailor my interactions with them accordingly. For example, if I notice that
a child is particularly curious or persistent, I can encourage and support their
exploration and problem-solving efforts. By doing so, I show the child that I value
and appreciate their unique strengths, which helps to build trust and rapport
between us. Similarly, by modeling positive dispositions in my own behavior, such
as being reflective or collaborative, I can help children develop these same habits
in themselves. In this way, observing and nurturing the dispositions in learning can
be a powerful tool for building strong and positive relationships with the children in
my care.
3. How have you changed your practice to be more developmentally appropriate
with children? (One paragraph)
First, I pay closer attention to the children's individual needs and interests,
and adjust my teaching and caregiving approaches accordingly. This involves
using a variety of teaching strategies, materials, and activities to support different
learning styles and levels of ability. I take the time to get to know each child and
observe their behaviors and interests, so that I can create learning experiences
that are meaningful and engaging for them. Second, I focus on creating a safe,
nurturing, and responsive environment that supports children's social, emotional,
and cognitive development. I use positive discipline techniques, promote social
and emotional competence, and provide opportunities for exploration and
experimentation. I strive to create an atmosphere of trust and respect, where
children feel valued and supported in their learning and development. Overall,
being more developmentally appropriate with children requires a deep
understanding of child development and a commitment to ongoing reflection and
learning. I make sure to stay up-to-date with the latest research and best practices
in early childhood education, and I regularly reflect on my own teaching and
caregiving practices to ensure that I am providing the best possible experiences
for the children in my care.
4. What dispositions for learning have you noticed in yourself as a student? (Speak
to at least 3) (Three paragraphs – one for each disposition noticed in yourself)
One disposition for learning that I have noticed in myself is curiosity. I am
always eager to learn and explore new topics, and I enjoy seeking out information
and asking questions. This curiosity drives me to engage with new ideas and
concepts, and to seek out new learning opportunities. By being curious, I am able
to stay engaged and motivated in my studies, and to develop a deeper
understanding of the subjects I am learning about.
Another disposition for learning that I exhibit is persistence. I don't give up
easily when faced with a challenging task or problem, and I am willing to put in the
time and effort necessary to achieve my goals. I believe that hard work and
determination are key to success, and I am always willing to push myself to do my
best. By being persistent, I am able to overcome obstacles and achieve my goals,
both in my studies and in other areas of my life.
A third disposition for learning that I possess is reflection. I take the time to
reflect on my learning and experiences, and to consider how I can improve and
grow as a student. I am open to feedback and constructive criticism, and I am
willing to adjust my approach to learning when necessary. By being reflective, I am
able to identify my strengths and weaknesses, and to develop a deeper
understanding of my own learning processes. This allows me to make more
effective use of my time and resources, and to continue growing and improving as
a student.
