Tutorial-3
Solve the following
1. A permanent magnet moving coil instrument has s coil of dimensions 15 mm by 12 mm. The flux
density in the air gap is B1.8 × 10−3 Wb/m2 and the spring constant is K = 0.14 × 10−6 Nm/rad.
Determine the number of turns required to produce an angular deflection of 90◦ when a current of 5
mA is flowing through the coil. Consider that the torque produced by the control springs is Tc = Kθ.
Answer : 136
2. A moving coil instrument has number of turns = 100, dimensions of the coil as 20 mm by 30 mm,
flux density in the gap as 0.1 Wb/m2 . Calculate the defecting torque when the coil carries a current
of 10 mA. Also calculate the deflection if teh control spring constant is 2 × 10−6 Nm/degree.
Answer : 6 × 10−5 Nm, 30◦
3. A moving coil voltmeter with a resistance of 20 Ω gives a full scale deflection of 120◦ when a potential
difference of 100 mV is applied across it. The moving coil has dimensions 30 mm by 25 mm with
100 turns. The control spring constant is 0.375 × 10−6 Nm/deg. Find the flux density in the air gap.
Find the diameter of the wire assuming 30% of the instrument resistance is due to coil winding and
a resistivity 1.7 × 10−8 Ωm.
Answer : 0.12 Wb/m2 , 0.2 mm
