Preface
This paper, titled Conditional Sentences, was prepared by Group 3 under the guidance of
our esteemed instructor, Mrs. Arimuliani. This work is intended to explore the concept
and application of conditional sentences within the context of standardized grammar
tests. The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive understanding of how
conditional sentences function and are assessed in formal grammar testing.
We acknowledge the valuable guidance and support provided by Mrs. Arimuliani
throughout this project. Her expertise and dedication have greatly enriched our learning
experience, enabling us to delve deeper into the subject and approach it with confidence.
We also extend our gratitude to all members of Group 3, who contributed significantly to
the research, analysis, and completion of this paper.
We hope this paper serves as a beneficial resource for understanding standardized
grammar testing, especially in the area of conditional sentences. Any suggestions or
constructive feedback to enhance the quality of this paper are welcome.
With sincere appreciation,

Introduction
1.1. Background of the study
The background of this paper on *conditional sentences* begins by
emphasizing the importance of mastering this structure in English language
learning. Conditional sentences allow speakers to express various hypothetical
scenarios and conditional statements, which are essential in everyday
conversation, academic contexts, and professional communication. These
sentences help convey possibilities, imaginations, and cause-effect relationships,
enriching both written and spoken expression.
In English, conditional sentences are divided into five types: Zero, First,
Second, Third, and Mixed Conditionals. Each type serves a specific purpose
based on the likelihood or hypothetical nature of the condition and its outcome.
Type 0 is used for general truths, Type 1 for real and possible situations, Type 2
for unreal or unlikely events in the present or future, Type 3 for hypothetical past
events, and Mixed Conditionals for linking past conditions with present or future
outcomes.
A thorough understanding of each type allows learners to communicate
more accurately and effectively, as they can distinguish between real and
imagined situations or conditions with specific results. Thus, this paper aims to
provide a comprehensive overview of conditional sentences, discussing their
structure, function, and examples, to help readers apply them confidently in
various contexts.

Disscussion
2.1. Definition of Conditional Sentence
Thomson and Martinet (1995:197) write that conditional sentences have two parts:
if clause and main clause. Meanwhile, according to Elliot (2006:4), a conditional sentence
is a two clause sentence in which the first clause states a supposition or hypothesis and the
second clause states the results if that condition is met. Conditional sentence is have two
parts or clauses that give a condition in the dependent clause and result in the independent
clause .
2.2. Types of Conditional Sentence
Conditional sentence consist of 5 types :
Zero conditional sentence
First conditional sentence
Second conditional sentence
Third conditional sentence
Mixed conditional sentence
2.2.1. Zero Conditional Sentence
Zero conditional used to indicate condition in the form of habits or facts that
commonly occur. This type of conditional talks about general truths, scientific facts or
something that is constantly true in specific conditions (Eastwood 1994 and Cowan 2008).
Form : if + subject + verb 1 , subject + verb 1 + compliment
Example : If he lies to her , she gets angry
2.2.2. First Condition Sentence
First conditional sentence used to indicate condition that may occur. This
conditional is used to express possibilities, either in the present or in the future. In this
conditional, there is the very likely and real possibility that the condition or the specific
situation will happen in the future.
Form : if + subject + verb 1 , subject + will + verb 1 + compliment
Example : If it rains , I will get wet
2.2.3. Second Conditional Sentence
Second conditional sentence used to show conditions in the form of thinks that are
impossible to happen now and in the future. This conditional is called “non-past” or
“present” (Katu'za 1986). It talks about unreal events in the present or in the future. The
simple past tense is used in this case to express the present or future situation.
Form : if + subject + verb 2 , subject + would + verb 1 + compliment
Example : If I won the lottery , I would buy a big house
2.2.4. Third Conditional Sentence
Third conditional sentence used to indicate conditions that could have happened
in the past. This conditional talks about unreal events in the past. This means that it is used
to talk about events that did not occur in the past.
Form : if + subject + had + verb 3 , subject + would have + verb 3 + compliment
Example : If I had got up on time , I wouldn’t have missed the bus .
2.2.5. Mixed Conditional Sentence
Mixed conditional sentence is combination of second conditional and third
conditional. Mixed Conditional used to express a unreal situations that connects different
times, such as connecting past conditions with post result.
For examples
If you had taught me how to make brownies, I wouldn’t buy it in the store.
If I were rich, I would have bought that car.
Bab 3
Closing
3.1Conclusion
Conditional sentence have five types consist of zero conditional sentence use of
simple present , first conditional sentence use of simple future , second conditional sentence
use of simple past tense , third conditional used of past future perfect , and the last mixed
conditional sentence is combination of second and third conditional . conditional sentences
play a crucial role in English language usage, allowing speakers to express possibilities,
hypothetical situations, and consequences across various contexts. By understanding the
different types—Zero, First, Second, Third, and Mixed Conditionals—learners can
effectively communicate ideas related to real and imaginary scenarios. Mastering these
structures helps in distinguishing between potential outcomes and hypothetical events,
enhancing both written and spoken communication skills.
