I. BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Atom is the smallest unit of matter. Molecules are made up of atoms. For instance, molecules of
metals such as nickel (Ni) and inert gases such as helium (He) consist of one atom each. These
molecules are called MONATOMIC. Mono means one. Molecules of many gases consist of two atoms
each, Examples are hydrogen (H2 ), nitrogen (N2 ), and oxygen (O2 ). These molecules are said to be
DIATOMIC. Di means two. Compound consist of two or more kind of atoms.
Element is a substance that consist one kind of atom. It cannot be broken down into any other
substance. Every element is made up of its own type of atom. This is why the chemical elements are
all very different from each other.
There are 118 known elements nowadays. Of these, only 94 are thought to naturally exist on
earth. Thanks to the work of our early scientists, they were able to systematically organize all of
these elements in what we call the Periodic Table of Elements. Amazingly, they were able to
logically arrange the elements in the table enabling one to have an idea of the properties of several
elements by knowing other elements related to them. These mean that there is no need to
memorize the periodic table but it is advantage to be familiar with it.
Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev was a Russian chemist and inventor who arranged the periodic
table so that elements with the most similar properties were placed in the same group. A group is
the vertical column of the periodic table while the horizontal rows are called periods.
There are many elements present in the food you eat – whether it is raw like banana or those
processed like banana chips, biscuits, milk, and juice. These are mostly nutrients which the human
body needs in order to function well. Some of these are calcium, magnesium, zinc, and selenium.
The Nutrition facts is a list of the different nutrients provided by the food product with their
corresponding percentage share on the daily recommended dietary allowance.
On the other hand, Ingredients give you a list of the materials that have been added to make the
food product. These materials are the sources of the nutrients. These are the ones that are taken in
by the body. You will find out how these elements are present in the food you eat.
II. LEARNING COMPETENCY WITH CODE
Recognize that substances are classified into elements and compounds (S7MT-Ig-h-5)

Activity 2: The Periodic Table: It’s Element-ary!
Objectives: At the end of the activity, student should be able to:
1. be familiar with the layout of the periodic table;
2. know some information about the elements that may be found in periodic table: and
3. identify the group number an element it belongs to.
Materials:
periodic table of elements
Procedure:
1. Every element has a name. In each box of the table, you will find only one name. One box
corresponds to one element.
2. For the next question, please refer to the periodic table of elements. Write your answers for
each question in Table 1.
a. Scientists agreed to give symbols for each element. This is very helpful especially to
those elements with long names. Instead of writing the full names, a one-letter or two-
letter symbol may be used. You can find these symbols in periodic table too. It is written
inside the same box for that element. For instance, O is the symbol of Oxygen.
Table 1. Name and symbol of some elements and the group number it belongs to.
Name Symbol Group Number
Note: Please add rows as necessary
Q1. What are the symbols for elements with long names such as beryllium,
phosphorus, germanium, and darmstadtium?
b. Notice that most of the one-letter symbols are the first letters of these elements.
Q2. What are the symbols for boron, nitrogen, fluorine, and vanadium?
c. For the two-letter symbols, most of them start with the letter of the element. Notice
that the second letter in the symbol may be any letter found in the element’s name.
Notice as well that only the first letter is capitalized for the two-letter symbols.
Q3. What are the symbols for lithium, chlorine, argon, calcium and manganese?
d. There are symbols that use letters that were taken from the ancient name of the
element. Examples of ancient names are ferrum (iron), argentum (silver), hydrargyrum
(mercury) and plumbum (lead).
Q4. What are the symbols for iron, silver, mercury, and lead?
e. In the earlier grade levels, you already encountered elements. You studied rocks and
learned that some are composed of silicon and magnesium. Some even have gold.

Q5. What are the symbols for silicon, magnesium and gold
f. When you were recycling materials, you segregated the objects according to what these
are made of. Some of them are made from aluminum, copper, tin or carbon.
Q6. What are the symbols for these 4 elements?
g. In nutrition, you were advised to eat enough bananas because it is a good source of
potassium.
Q7. What is the symbol for potassium?
h. In each box, you will find a number on top of each symbol. This is the atomic number. In
the higher grade levels, you will learn what this number represents. For ow, use it as a
guide on how the elements are sequenced.
Q8. What is the element’s name and symbol that comes before titanium? How
about that comes after barium?
i. Elements that are in the same column have similar properties. For this, each column is
called a family and has a family name. However, at this point, you will refer first to each
family name with their corresponding group number. Notice that the columns are
numbered 1 to 18 from left to right.
Q9. In which group does each of the elements listed in Table 1 belongs to.

Activity 3: Element Search
Objectives:
At the end of this activity, student should be able to recognize the names of elements
and to write their symbols and group number.
Materials:
Periodic table of elements
Procedure:
Below is a story that will familiarize you with the names of elements. Read it carefully,
and find as many elements as you can as read through.
1. Circle each element found in the story. Some of the names are slightly modified.
2. In the table, write in the first column the element name as found in the story. In the second
column write the correctly spelled name. In the third column write the symbol of the element.
And in the fourth, its group number.
Christmas Story
In a little backstreet in Wilton, we find chemistry teachers Ebenezeer Jacobs, Ebenezeer Blizman,
Ebenezeer Karas and Ebenezeer Gregory licking their tunstens with mercurial delight as they counted their
gold and silver collections from their student’s fees for broken glassware. “Praise, O Dimium!” the
Ebenezeer shouted. “Poor Marie Osmium, usually warm and iridium, has collapsed and is lying phlatinum
from our titanium final examination, yet we are not yet dysprosium to become goof samariums. Did you see
the way she lanthanum on the floor after seeing our test?” asked an Ebenezeer. “Gadolinium!” exclaimed
another Ebenezeer. “Call a student government copper to lead her to her study hall.”
And in the prep room, Rubidium Cratchett Mola, local philosopher and lab technetium, a graduate of
Berkelium Colegium in Californium, washed glassware in cold waer while reading Kafka’s “Investigations of
a Dog”. Rub was no Einsteium, but he was not sodium either, and he did tend right to bismuth all the time.
It was Christmas Eve and Rub asked to go holmium early. “You’ve got a lot of gallium,” replied Ebenezeer.
“I’ll be francium but fermium. Half a day’s work, halfnium a day’s pay.” “That’s all right,”the mystic rub
reflected. “I’m anti-money away.”
Late that night, the Ebenezeers awoke to see the ghastly and palladium face of their departed colleague.
Gregor Mendel, who ironically looked worse in real life. With Mendel leaving him, an Ebenezeer heard the
ghost say, “Iodide neon to a hundred and twenty years ago and since then I’ve gone out each night, trudging
around with those arsenic genetics test that are as heavy and promethium as the rock problem. Long and
protactinium is my argony. Mend your way Ebenezeers! Thus spoke the genetic ghost this abrominuation
and departed.
“That was very strange and ytterbium,” thought the Ebenezeers as they dozed off. But another ghost
who looked a carbon copy of St. Nickelous came to wake the Ebenezeers. Growling goodbye to their
starving dog, Plutonium, the Ebenezeers grabbed the ghost by the sleeve, and rhodium off into the
Christmas past.

They flew all over Europium (to search Romium, Italium, then to Polonium), making a raid on old girl
friends that an Ebenezeer knew while he was in the Americium armed forces. There were Fluorine and
Ruthenium, and a couple of great Scandium blondes. How he loved to pinch Iorine! What a foxy
genmeration! They dinned on stuffed boar – on corn on the cob, although garnished with herbiums from
Iindium. For dessert, they munched on tiny berylliums from Germanium. Very tantalum. As they were
feasting and flirting and fooling around as only the young and silicon, it occurred to the Ebenezeers that
being mean old chemistry teachers were not the magnesium of occupations. But the jolly old ghost scolded
the proud and vanadium Ebenezeers for actinium up and took them holmium again.
Then just as their dreams were becoming mildly pleasant, the most prephosporous apparition of all
appeared and carried them off to view all sorts of ugly things which might come to pass. First, they saw
Molly B. Denim coming out of that scavengering undertaking firm, Cesium and Barium, with Ebenezeer’s
favorite jigsaw puzzle tests in her dungaree pocket. Then on to Rubidium Cratchett’s hovel were poor tiny
Tin lay crippled; with his legs thorium and no way to helium. He was sulfuring and zincsing into greater
agony, “oh what a cad me am!” declared an Ebenezeer, who wasn’t much of grammatarian either and with
what they awoke new and nobelium men. With radium smiles, they swore to Xenon never to give so cerium
a chemistry test to tiny Tin again. Agile and lithium, and with a manganous heart, an Ebenezeer sprang
from bed, took out a new dimium and called the doctor to come over and curium tiny Tin’s leg. Tin was
tellurium with joy and said, “Bless everyone, even mean old chemistry teachers.”
