Replacing the Management Module in VNX SPE

This document describes how to replace a Management module in the VNX Storage Processor Enclosure
(SPE). The tasks apply to VNX5700 and 7500 models for File or Block VNX SPE systems.

Note: Do not completely remove assembly- or enclosure-level hardware from the system or rack unless
specifically directed. Figures in this procedure depict hardware completely removed to increase their
clarity.

CAUTION: Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage equipment and impair electrical circuitry.
Always follow ESD prevention procedures when removing and replacing Customer-Replaceable
Units (CRUs) and Field-Replaceable Units (FRUs).

Task Summary
So that you can understand what is involved, the table of Contents lists the high-level tasks required for
this procedure. Take a moment to become familiar with these tasks. If you have any questions, contact
Customer Support before you begin the procedure.

Task 1: Check the system for Faulted Hardware

Follow the steps below to verify the status of the system's hardware components.

Diagnosing faulted storage system hardware components

Use this procedure to log in to EMC Unisphere and check for any faulted hardware components in the
storage system.
To check the system for faulted hardware components using Unisphere:

1. [ ] Start Unisphere for the storage system by entering the IP address in a browser window.
2. [ ] In the system drop-down list on the menu bar, select the system in which you may have a
faulted hardware component.
3. [ ] Select System > Storage Hardware.
4. [ ] Check for any faulted storage hardware components.
5. [ ] To perform a health check on the storage system, use the Verify Storage System wizard.
Start the Unisphere Service Manager by doing either one of the following:

a. Click the Unisphere Service Manager icon on your desktop, or

b. Select Start > All Programs or Start > Programs, then select EMC > Unisphere > Unisphere
Service Manager > Unisphere Service Manager.
6. [ ] Log in to your system.
7. [ ] From the System screen, select Diagnostics > Verify Storage System to run the
storage system health check wizard.

Task 2: Replace Failed Management Module

This tasks replaces a failed Management module. There are two Management modules in the SPE (A
and B). From the rear, Management module B is on the left. Management module A is in the seventh slot
over from the left.

1. [ ] Identify the faulted I/O module by the amber fault light on the Management module
handle (Figure 1). If Management module A failed, it would be at slot #7 from the left.
2. [ ] Remove the management LAN and SPS cables that are attached to the management
module and label them for replacement later.
3. [ ] Pull the orange release trigger and remove the management module from the chassis
(Figure 1).
4. [ ] Then gently pull the module from the chassis.

Install Replacement I/O module

Unpack the replacement I/O module and place it on a padded, static-free surface. Save the packing
material for returning the module that you are replacing.

Note: You must install a replacement I/O module in the same slot from which you removed the faulted I/O
module and a new I/O module in the same slot from which you removed the I/O filler module.

5. [ ] Align the replacement module with the empty slot and push it into the chassis (Figure 1).
If Management module A failed, it would be at slot #7 from the left.
6. [ ] Press the orange tab inward to secure the management module in place.
The management module must be fully seated in the chassis for the tab to engage. If the tab springs
back, re-seat the module.
7. [ ] Reconnect the LAN and SPS cables that you removed previously.

Task 3: Verify Operation of the Replaced Module

1. [ ] Start Unisphere for the storage system by entering the control station IP address in a
browser window.
2. [ ] In the system drop-down list on the menu bar, select the system in which you installed or
replaced the part.

3. [ ] Select System > Storage Hardware.

4. [ ] Expand the enclosure in which you installed or replaced the part, and navigate to the part.
5. [ ] Verify that the part is in the enclosure and that it is not faulted.
6. [ ] If this is a File system, open terminal emulation or PuTTY session, view the system state
(if this is a Block system, skip this step):
/nas/bin/nas_checkup

The nas_checkup command runs health checks on the File components as well as the storage
system. If the output of the nas_checkup command indicates any Errors (for example, if a check
does not pass), correct the error, following the instructions provided, and then re-run the command
before continuing.

Note: It is not required that you correct the Warnings or Information notifications at this time, though it
is recommended that these notifications be reviewed.

8. [ ] Log in to your system.
9. [ ] From the System screen, select Diagnostics > Verify Storage System to run the
storage system health check wizard.

Finish

Parts Return
10. [ ] Locate the Parts Return Label package and fill out the shipping label and apply to box for
return to EMC.
11. [ ] Apply other labels for the box appropriate to this returning part. Check for any
Engineering bulletin and with the Customer to determine if it is FA bound.

IMPORTANT: If Engineering has requested the part to be shipped back for an FA, ensure the proper
ship to information has been entered and Attention to and/or Contact Name is provided in the shipping
label.

12. [ ] Securely tape the box and Ship the failed part back to EMC.
