SURFACE AREA & VOLUME
GRADE : 9TH ICSE Marks : 30
1. Find the length of the longest thin stick that can be kept in a room whose length, breadth
and height are 3 m, 2 m and √3 m respectively. (2)
2. A tall rectangular vessel is half-filled with water. The dimensions of its base are 50 cm x 30
cm. A heavy metal cube of edge 10 cm is dropped into the vessel. Find the rise in the water
level in the vessel. (3)
3. The external dimensions of a closed box are 25 cm, 23 cm and 18 cm. If the thickness of the
wood used is 2 cm, find
(i) The total inner surface area of the box
(ii) The total cost of the wood required to make the box if the wood costs Rs 1 per cm2.
(4)
4. The internal dimensions of a box are 15 cm x 12 cm x 9cm. How many cubes of side 3 cm can
it contain? If the height is made 8 cm in place of 9 cm, how many such cubes can it contain?
(4)
5. The length, breadth and height of a classroom are in the ratio 3 : 2 : 1. A student requires
3600 cm2 of floor area to sit. If a maximum of 150 students can sit in the classroom, find the
dimensions of the classroom. (3)
6. The length and breadth of a hall are 22 m and 18 m. If the total area of the floor and the
ceiling are equal to the total area of the four walls, find the height of the hall. (3)
7. The dimensions of a room are 8.6 m x 6.4 m x 4 m. It has two doors each measuring 2 m by 1
m and four equal windows in the shape of squares. If the cost of painting the four walls is Rs
4,480 at Rs 40 per m2, find the size of the windows. (3)
8. The measures of a rectangular field are 20 m x 15 m. A cubical ditch of edge 4 m is dug at
each of the four corners of the field and the mud dug out is spread uniformly over the
remaining field. By what height does the field get raised? (4)
9. A rectangular hollow pipe is made of 1 cm thick iron sheet. If the length of the pipe is 2 m
and the other outer dimensions of the pipe are 10 cm x 8 cm, then find the weight of the
pipe if 80 cm3 weighs 1 kg. (4)
