The Oscars
Every year in January, the most prestigious award ceremony for
movies, the Oscars, takes place. These awards are given by the Academy
of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). They are voted
by members of the committee. The first Oscar was awarded in 1929.
The name of the award, “Oscar”, is disputed. The most widely accepted
story is that is was named after Oscar Pierce, the cousin of Margaret
Herrick, the first executive secretary of the Academy. Currently there
are 24 different categories including Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor,
Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best International Feature Film,

a combination of the words “Bombay” and “Hollywood”. Surprisingly,
Indian cinema is the world’s largest film industry. They produce almost
2,000 films every year. Bollywood makes up 43% of this. Although most

Indian films really began to gain popularity during the late 1940s, after
India gained its independence from Britain. Many films started being
produced in Hindi. These films belong to many different genres, including
drama, action, comedy, and musicals. The term “Bollywood” was born
in the 1970s. Its signature type of film was masala, which combined
various genres: action, comedy, drama, romance, and musical. Bollywood

Special techniques have been used to change the genetic composition of plants
for many centuries. These have come to be called genetically modified organisms,

the cons. GMOs have been proven to be safe in some studies, but not in all studies.
They also lower the price of food. Additionally, they have environmental benefits

They can also harm the environment in that they require toxic herbicides.
Because of these negative aspects, many European countries do not allow GMOs.

Eco-Schools Program
The eco-schools program is sponsored by the UNESCO. It began
in 1992 as a result of needs identified at the United Nations Conference on
Environment and Development. It is now effective in school classrooms
around the world, with over 20,000,000 students that participate.
The idea is to get young people involved with the environment in an
active way by being able to make decisions at their schools. It instills
in young people the concern for their planet.
How does the program work? It involves three parts: The Seven Steps
Framework, the Eco-Schools Themes, and Assessment for the Green Flag.
The Seven Steps help the school establish the program and maintain
the program. The Eco-Schools Themes are 12 main topics that are the
focus of the program: biodiversity and nature, climate change, energy,

We as humans have become an indoor species. We spend less and less time
outside. But few of us are aware of the benefits of being surrounded by nature,
and there are several. First, being in nature reduces stress by lowering the level
of cortisol, the stress hormone. The sights, sounds, and smells of nature help
to slow your heart rate and regulate breathing. Second, nature is rich in prana, the
primordial force that supports all life. You can absorb a lot of it by breathing fresh,
clean air. Third, the natural world inspires a sense of awe in its beauty. You feel
humbled in its presence. Fourth, you can reconnect with the ground. If you touch
the ground with your bare feet, the flow of energy helps reduce inflammation,
stress, and anxiety, and also improve circulation. Finally, being in nature can
help improve your sleep rhythms and mood. So this weekend, make plans

every time the connection takes place, then it becomes a habit. For
example, a feeling of stress can cause a person to overeat. This bond
between the thought of being stressed and overeating can strengthen
over time. If this happens consistently every time a person feels stressed,
it becomes a habit.
Break (Bad Habits)
Habits can contribute to defining our character, both positively and
negatively. We should constantly strive to create good, healthy habits,
and work to break unhealthy ones.

Do you crack your knuckles? We mean do you make your joints make a
cracking sound by squeezing or pulling your fingers? Studies show that about
half of the population does it. Often times it is caused by nervousness, anxiety,
boredom, or stress. And it has been criticized by some, saying that it causes
arthritis. However, an article in the Swiss Medical Journal says that there is no
evidence supporting this being the case. One doctor even experimented on
himself by cracking his knuckles on one hand twice a day and never on the other
hand for 50 years. At the end of the experiment, there was no difference between
the knuckles on his right and left hand. So it’s not dangerous to our health, but
it can be annoying for the people around us. Like other habits, it can be broken.
You have to be conscious of when you are doing it and think about what may
cause you to do it. Then, when you feel like doing it next time, occupy your
hands with something else that will prevent you from cracking your knuckles.

According to recent studies, approximately half of teenagers bite their nails.
It seems that if your parents bite their nails, you are more likely to bite yours
too. Scientists say that nail biting is associated with emotional or mental
trouble – people who are nervous, anxious, or depressed tend to bite their nails.
This is a bad habit because it can make you sick, or make your nails grow strangely.

tastes really awful! You can wear gloves to cover your fingers. You should also find
something to keep your hands and mouth busy. This could be a stress ball, a pen…
and for your mouth, a piece of gum.
No matter what technique you use, you need to find what makes you bite your
nails in the first place. Are you nervous? Anxious? Depressed? Usually the best
way to break a bad habit is to get to the root of the problem and solve that. Then
you will notice that the habit is no longer a habit.

Blueprints
You probably recognize two words in the word “blueprint”: blue and
print. Can you guess what blueprints are? They are the drawings that
architects do to design a building. But the name “blueprint” isn’t being
used much anymore. These drawings are now referred to as construction
documents, drawings, or plans. But originally, when they were first
invented in 1842, they were blue because of the chemicals that were
used in the special paper. When it was exposed to light, the paper turned
blue and the lines on the paper were white. Now that there are modern
printing methods, architects don’t need to use blueprints anymore

Assessment
1 Listen to someone talk about her childhood home and decide if each of the
following sentences are True (T) or False (F) based on what you hear.
People have different living options. In big cities, it is common for people to live in
apartments. Cities are crowded places, so apartments are good living arrangements
to save space. Apartment buildings can be a few stories, or they can be several
stories high. They can be suites, for one person or a couple, or they can have two,
three, or four bedrooms. They usually have a parking garage for people’s cars,
and in some cases even a gym or a pool. People can rent or buy apartments.
In places where there is more space, people often live in houses. They can be one,
two, or three floors. Most of the time they have a private space outside, either
a garden or a patio. People can rent houses, paying a monthly price to the owner.
People can also own houses by paying a mortgage, a monthly payment that is
made usually for 10-30 years until the price of the house is completely paid off.
The benefit of owning a house is that later you can pass the house down to the
next generation, or eventually sell it and receive money.

these houses have been replaced by ones built with cement with zinc

In Loja, the Saraguro people build houses with material that is native

They use clay and straw for the walls, and clay tiles for the roof.
This keeps the house warm. These houses usually only have one window

A Home Improvement Reality Show
Nowadays, on TV we can see many different types of reality shows.
There are some that based on home improvement. These shows go to
houses that are falling apart and suggest renovations for them to make
them look better.
For this project, you are going to create your own home improvement
show. Follow the steps below.
Step 1
Freepik
Form groups of 4-5 students and brainstorm some ideas about your
show. Where will it take place? What will the house look like before
the renovation? After the renovation? Who are the people who own
the house?
Notes
Step 2
Look for pictures of a house before renovations and one after.
The two pictures should look similar in that the houses should
be a similar type. With your group, determine what renovations
needed to be done in order to make the house look like the final version.
Step 3
Create a script in which 2-3 members of your group are the home
renovators and 2-3 members are the owners of the house. Write
a conversation between the members of your group. Start when
the renovators first meet the homeowners, then somewhere in the
middle of the renovation, then at the end.
Step 4
Record your show or perform it in front of the class. Remember
to show the pictures of before and after the renovation. Try to show
emotion when you perform: sadness, excitement, surprise, etc.

Step 5
Discuss the home renovation shows you saw. Who did the best
renovation? Who did the best acting? Who was the most entertaining?

Assessment Are you internet savvy?
4 Read the following text about Netflix and answer the questions that follow
in complete sentences.
Netflix is the first name that many people around the world think of when
they are asked about an app that lets them watch movies and TV shows. Before
Netflix, in different countries around the world, there were stores where
you could rent movies for a few days and return them. But now, Netflix has
replaced most of those stores as the preferred way to enjoy a movie or TV show.
You don’t have to go anywhere; you just need an internet connection.
How does Netflix work? It’s very user-friendly. You sign up and pay a monthly
fee, and you have unlimited access to all of the shows and movies that Netflix
has on its site. You can use it on your cellphone, your tablet, your computer,
or even your television. Each member of your family can have their own username.
This way, if you start watching a movie but you can’t finish it, you can go to your
username next time and continue where you had stopped. Netflix also constantly
provides you with recommendations for movies or TV shows based on the ones
you have viewed before. This way, you will be sure that you get recommendations
that are meant for teens, and not cartoons for your 4-year-old brother!
