Predicting Future Energy Needs Based on Sustainable Development Scenarios
CONCEPT NOTE
(SDG 7: Sustainable Cities and Communities)
Concept of the Project :
Our future is intensely focused on renewable energy. This project will investigate how the use of
renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydro, and geo-biomass has changed in different
regions. We wish to find out which areas have converted to renewable energy at the fastest pace,
what approaches worked best, and where we should invest going forward. This leads us towards
a greener planet by reducing energy costs and minimizing environmental impact.
Problem Statement :
Renewable energy is essential for sustainable development. There has been a significant shift in
recent years towards producing clean energy. However, it is important to note which areas in
terms of technological advancements have progressed more than others so far. The aim of this
project is to assess those nations and regions that have made strides towards embracing
renewables. Leading and emerging players would be assessed through growth patterns in wind,
solar, and hydro, among other renewable types. These data will guide us on future investments
and strategies leading to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future with fewer carbon
emissions for life on earth than before.
Objective of the Project :
The primary objective of this project is to analyze energy consumption to identify the future energy
trends for consumption of non- renewable sources and to propose data-driven solutions to
conserve the non-renewable energy. The specific objectives are:
● To analyze the energy consumption data from reliable sources.
● To anticipate future energy demands and plan accordingly to ensure energy security and
sustainability.
● To assess the growth trends and contributions of different renewable energy sources
● To develop predictive models for future energy consumption based on past energy
consumption.
● To propose actionable solutions and policy recommendations to mitigate urban
Data Source Used:
This project will use energy consumption dataset from the following sources:
1. Kaggle: Energy consumption dataset on Kaggle, such as the " Power consumption in
India(2019-2020) " available as https://www.kaggle.com/datasets/twinkle0705/state-wise-
power-consumption-in-india .
2. OpenAI: An open platform that aggregates energy consumption data from government
and research-grade sources worldwide to further help us in finding relevant data and
process them. The dataset is expanded with help of Open AI for being too short for further
predictions.
3. International Energy Agency (IEA) : Energy Consumption guidelines and global reports.

The key features of the dataset will include:
1. Historical Energy Data:
● Energy Production by Source: Detailed data on historical production volumes for hydro,
solar, wind, and geo/biomass/other energy sources.

data.
Tool for Analysis :
The following tools and technologies will be used for data analysis:
1. Python: For data cleaning, analysis, and visualization, using libraries such as Pandas,
NumPy, Matplotlib, and Seaborn.
2. Google Colab: For documenting the analysis process and visualizations.
3. Scikit-learn: For developing predictive models and machine learning algorithms.
4. Tableau: For creating interactive dashboards and visualizations to present the findings.
5. Keras: Will be used for building and training advanced neural network models. It is a high-
level deep learning API that runs on top of TensorFlow, providing an easy-to-use interface
for developing deep learning models.
6. XGBoost: (Extreme Gradient Boosting) will be used for developing high-performance
gradient boosting models. It is an efficient and scalable implementation of gradient
boosting, known for its performance and speed.
Hypothesis :
The hypothesis of the project is that more accurate forecasts can be made about the future energy
consumption patterns using advanced data analytics techniques in combination with machine
learning models applied to historical energy consumption data. Furthermore, these models may
detect particular time and spatial trends in consuming energy that helps optimize energy
distribution and makes it possible to elaborate focal power conservation measures.
Methodology :
The project will be conducted in the following phases:
Data Collection:
● Gather energy production/consumption data from trusted sources.
● Compile economic and technological data supporting the analysis of growth of the
renewable energy.
Data Cleaning and Preprocessing:
● Handle missing values, outliers, and inconsistencies in the data.
● Standardize data formats and integrate datasets from different sources to increase
consistency and accuracy.
Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA):
● Perform descriptive statistical analysis to understand the distribution and variability of
energy consumption/production.
● Visualize temporal trends and spatial distributions using charts and maps.
Source Identification:
● Use correlation analysis and regression models to identify key attributes for growth of
renewable energies.
● Analyze the impact of different factors (e.g., economic growth, technological
advancements, etc) .
Predictive Modeling:
● Develop machine learning models (Regression-based) to predict future energy
needs/demands based on historical data.
● Validate and test the models using appropriate metrics.
Solution Development:
● Based on the analysis, propose solutions such as investment in renewable energy
