QUESTION 1

Virtualization is a technology that can be used to reproduce or articulate servers, storage,

networks and any other physical devices. Virtual software emulates physical hardware so as to
host several virtual machine on one physical machine.

(Anon., n.d.)

ADVANTAGES:

Uses Hardware Efficiently: By and large, a number of companies invest a lot of money installing
their systems and servers but end up using a small percentage of that investment efficiently.
However, if they decide on virtualization, then can run several instances on the same hardware
and get the utmost value from it.

Available at All Times: Enables aspects that enables virtual instances to exist at all times.

The big selling point here is the possibility of physically re-locating the virtual instance from one
server site to another. It can be done without the need of stopping and then restarting the
processes that are already up and running.

Recovery Is Easy: Similarly, due to the existence of virtual instances on remote servers,
duplication, backup, and recovery are less difficult.

There is now near real-time backup and mirroring tools that are available, which gives one the
confidence that, at any given time, no data can be lost.

DISADVANTAGES:

High Initial Investment: Virtualization does come with certain drawbacks however and one of
these is that it can be very costly in the first instance.

Virtualization, therefore, enables the business to cut on operational expenses. However, the setup
of servers and storage entails higher costs to be incurred at the beginning as compared to a
regular setup

Data Can be at Risk: With VDI or virtual desktops implemented on centralized hardware, your
data is stored on a third-party resource.

It can lead to leakage of your data or even act as a launch pad for an attack on your data. This is
difficult if the service provider does not have appropriate security measures necessary for
protecting your virtual instance and information.

Quick Scalability is a Challenge: It is easy to scale on virtualization, but it becomes a bit of a

problem if it has to be done within a given time frame.

In case of physical setup, there is flexibility to add more and additional equipment when in need
which may however lead to some initial complications with setting up.
In virtualization for example, there may be the need to make sure that all required software and
security among other needed components are available can be very cumbersome.

Performance Witness a Dip: Virtualization is one such benefit which helps in achieving the
optimum utilisation of all resources. But it is also a challenge when one gets to that point where
he/she requires a further push, but that is not possible.

In virtualization, resources are available for use by more than one customer. While it may have
taken one single user days just to 'consume' certain resources, they are now being divided among
three or four users

Unintended Server Sprawl: One of the most significant issues that a lot of server admins and
users struggle with is the occurrence of unplanned server proliferation. Most complaints that
service desk persons have are of server sprawls.

While a physical server has to be established and installed on site, the virtual one can be created
in several minutes.

(Anon., n.d.)

Large data storage and processing devices known as servers can be either physical hardware or
virtual storehouses located on the internet. Servers are operated by computers or software
systems and are connected to a network.

Any type of device that shares and saves information can function as a server. Servers have the
capability to both store and process information within their own system or request it from
another source.

Servers also serve in the following ways to enable users to access various data functions. They
provide storage space for data of organizations and make it available to the users on intranet or
over the internet. They to act on request by users who wish to access certain files from stored or
linked data repositories.

Types of Servers:

Web Server: A public domain software is utilized for accessing the internet through an open-
source web server. Your own computer is connected to stored information from an internet
website by these servers. Information for the internet is stored by web servers and retrieved via
"HTTP" code, which is then sent to your web browser. This type of server is widely used.

Proxy Server: Proxy servers act like middlemen between a main server and a user's server. After
the proxy server sends the website's data to your computer's IP, it's like a middleman passing
notes in class. This step upgrades safety by making sure that data gets asked for and sent from
the main place to a middleman server, instead of going straight from one person to another. A
proxy server can block bad stuff on the internet..

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server: FTP servers are like digital post offices that let you send
files from one computer to another. And when you get stuff, it's like the cloud computer sends it
back to your computer. It's also known as the File Transfer Protocol, which explains how a
server can link two computers so they can swap data safely.

Application Server: They provide end-users with access to software resources via connections to
virtual server instances. This makes it possible for users to use programs without having to
download the information to their own devices. Application servers can serve several users with
large amounts of application data making them vital in business applications.

File Server: File servers store data files for multiple users, allowing data retrieval and saving or
writing files to a computer faster. Organizations that need many users to access files that are
more conveniently and safely stored on a server than on a personal computer typically use this
type of server.

Database Server: A database server is a large storage space that organizations use and access to
run multiple programs to meet their needs. They can run independently of any database structure.

Mail Server: A mail server is responsible for storing and distributing mail to clients using email
service platforms. Individual users can access their email without the need to run any systems on
their personal devices, as mail servers are constantly connected to a network.

Print Server: A print server allows remote connection to local computers for printing over a
network. Businesses can utilize a single printer to cater to an entire department through these
servers. Some printers have built-in servers for network use in an office.
Domain Name System (DNS) server: Readable domain names get transformed into IP addresses
in computer language by the DNS server. It locates the desired address using the user's search
parameters.

Gaming Server: Large gaming networks use servers to connect users from around the world.
These servers host multi-player online games.
