Exercise 14.1
1. Find the common factors of the given terms.
(i) 12𝑥, 36
(ii) 2𝑦, 22𝑥𝑦
(iii) 14 𝑝𝑞, 28𝑝2 𝑞 2
(iv) 2𝑥, 3𝑥 2 , 4
(v) 6𝑎𝑏𝑐, 24𝑎𝑏 2 , 12𝑎2 𝑏
(vi) 16𝑥 3 , −4𝑥 2 , 32𝑥
(vii) 10 𝑝𝑞, 20𝑞𝑟, 30𝑟𝑝
(viii) 3𝑥 2 𝑦 3 , 10𝑥 3 𝑦 2 , 6𝑥 2 𝑦 2 𝑧
Solution:
(i) 12𝑥 = 12 × 𝑥

 12𝑥 = 12 × 𝑥 = 2 × 2 × 3 × 𝑥
36 ⇒

36 = 2 × 2 × 3 × 3
Thus,
12𝑥 = 2 × 2 × 3 × 𝑥
36 = 2 × 2 × 3 × 3
So, the common factors are 2, 2 and 3

Class- VIII-CBSE-Mathematics Factorisation

And 2 × 2 × 3 = 12
(ii) 2𝑦, 22𝑥𝑦
2𝑦 = 2 × 𝑦
22 𝑥𝑦 = 22 × 𝑥 × 𝑦
= 2 × 11 × 𝑥 × 𝑦
So, the common factors are 2 and y
And2 × 𝑦 = 2𝑦
(iii) 14 𝑝𝑞, 28𝑝2 𝑞 2
14𝑝𝑞 = 14 × 𝑝 × 𝑞

=2×7×𝑝×𝑞
28 𝑝2 𝑞 2 = 28 × 𝑝2 × 𝑞 2

= 2 × 2 × 7 × 𝑝2 × 𝑞 2
=2×2×7×𝑝×𝑞×𝑞×𝑞
So,14𝑝𝑞 = 2 × 7 × 𝑝 × 𝑞
28𝑝2 𝑞 2 = 2 × 2 × 7 × 𝑝 × 𝑝 × 𝑞 × 𝑞
 the common factor are 2, 7, 𝑝 and 𝑞
And 2 × 7 × 𝑝 × 𝑞 = 14 × 𝑝𝑞
= 14𝑝𝑞
(iv) 2𝑥, 3𝑥 2 , 4
2𝑥 = 2 × 𝑥
3𝑥 2 = 3 × 𝑥 2
=3×𝑥×𝑥

There is no common factor visible.

∴ 1 is the only common factor of the given terms.
(v) 6𝑎𝑏𝑐, 24𝑎𝑏 2 , 12𝑎2 𝑏
6𝑎𝑏𝑐 = 6 × 𝑎𝑏𝑐
= 2 × 3 × 𝑎𝑏𝑐
=2×3×𝑎×𝑏×𝑐
24𝑎𝑏 2 = 24 × 𝑎𝑏 2

= 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 × 𝑎𝑏 2
=2×2×2×3×𝑎×𝑏×𝑏
12𝑎2 𝑏 = 12 × 𝑎2 𝑏

= 2 × 2 × 3 × 𝑎2 × 𝑏
=2×2×3×𝑎×𝑎×𝑏
So,6 𝑎𝑏𝑐 = 2 × 3 × 𝑎 × 𝑏 × 𝑐
24𝑎𝑏 2 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 × 𝑎 × 𝑏 × 𝑐
12 𝑎2 𝑏 = 2 × 2 × 3 × 𝑎 × 𝑎 × 𝑏
 the common factor are 2, 3, a and b
And 2 × 3 × 𝑎 × 𝑏 = 6 × 𝑎𝑏
= 6 𝑎𝑏
(vi) 16𝑥 3 , −4𝑥 2 , 32𝑥
16𝑥 3 = 16 × 𝑥 3

= 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 𝑥3
=2×2×2×2×𝑥×𝑥×𝑥
−4𝑥 2 = −4 × 𝑥 2
= −1 × 4 × 𝑥 2
= −1 × 2 × 2 × 𝑥 2
= −1 × 2 × 2 × 𝑥 × 𝑥
32𝑥 = 32 × 𝑥

=2×2×2×2×2×𝑥
So,16𝑥 3 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 𝑥 × 𝑥 × 𝑥
−4𝑥 2 = −1 × 2 × 2 × 𝑥 × 𝑥
32𝑥 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 𝑥
 the common factors are 2, 2 and x
And2 × 2 × 𝑥 = 4 × 𝑥
= 4𝑥
(vii) 10 𝑝𝑞, 20𝑞𝑟, 30𝑟𝑝
10𝑝𝑞 = 10 × 𝑝𝑞
= 2 × 5 × 𝑝𝑞
=2×5×𝑝×𝑞
20𝑞𝑟 = 20 × 𝑞𝑟

=2×2×5×𝑞×𝑟
30𝑟𝑝 = 30 × 𝑟𝑝

= 2 × 3 × 5 × 𝑟𝑝
=2×2×5×𝑟×𝑝
So,10𝑝𝑞 = 2 × 5 × 𝑝 × 𝑞
20𝑞𝑟 = 2 × 2 × 5 × 𝑞 × 𝑟
30𝑟𝑝 = 2 × 2 × 5 × 𝑟 × 𝑝
 the common factors are 2 and 5
And2 × 5 = 10
(viii) 3𝑥 2 𝑦 3 , 10𝑥 3 𝑦 2 , 6𝑥 2 𝑦 2 𝑧
3𝑥 2 𝑦 3 = 3 × 𝑥 2 × 𝑦 2
=3×𝑥×𝑥×𝑦×𝑦×𝑦
10𝑥 3 𝑦 2 = 10 × 𝑥 3 × 𝑦 2
= 2 × 5 × 𝑥3 × 𝑦2
=2×5×𝑥×𝑥×𝑥×𝑦×𝑦
6𝑥 2 𝑦 2 𝑧 = 6 × 𝑥 2 × 𝑦 2 × 𝑧
= 2 × 3 × 𝑥2 × 𝑦2 × 𝑧
=2×3×𝑥×𝑥×𝑦×𝑦×𝑧
So,3𝑥 2 𝑦 3 = 2 × 𝑥 × 𝑥 × 𝑦 × 𝑦 × 𝑦
10𝑥 3 𝑦 2 = 2 × 5 × 𝑥 × 𝑥 × 𝑥 × 𝑦 × 𝑦
6𝑥 2 𝑦 2 𝑧 = 2 × 3 × 𝑥 × 𝑥 × 𝑦 × 𝑦 × 𝑧

2. Factorise the following expressions.
(i) 7𝑥 − 42
(ii) 6𝑝 − 12𝑞
(iii) 7𝑎2 + 14𝑎
(iv) −16𝑧 + 20𝑧 3
(v) 20𝑙 2 𝑚 + 30 𝑎⁄𝑚
(vi) 5𝑥 2 𝑦 − 15𝑥𝑦 2
(vii) 10 𝑎2 − 15 𝑏 2 + 20 𝑐 2
(viii) −4𝑎2 + 4𝑎𝑏 − 4 𝑐𝑎
(ix) 𝑥 2 𝑦𝑧 + 𝑥𝑦 2 𝑧 + 𝑥𝑦𝑧 2
(x) 𝑎𝑥 2 𝑦 + 𝑏𝑥𝑦 2 + 𝑐𝑥𝑦𝑧
Solution:
(i) 7𝑥 − 42
Method 1:
7𝑥 = 7 × 𝑥
42 = 2 × 3 × 7

7 is the only common factor.

7𝑥 − 42 = (7 × 𝑥) − (2 × 3 × 7)
= 7(𝑥 − (2 × 3))
= 7(𝑥 − 6)
Method 2:
7𝑥 − 42

Practice more on Factorisation Page - 6 www.embibe.com

Class- VIII-CBSE-Mathematics Factorisation

7𝑥 − 42
= (7 × 𝑥) − (7 × 6)
= 7(𝑥 − 6) (taking 7 as common)
(ii) 6𝑝 − 12𝑞
Method 1:
6𝑝 = 6 × 𝑝
=2×3×𝑝
12𝑞 = 12 × 𝑞

=2×2×3×𝑞
So, the common factors are 2 and 3.
6𝑝 − 12𝑞 = (2 × 3 × 𝑝) − (2 × 2 × 3 × 𝑞)
= 2 × 3(𝑝 − (2 × 𝑞))
= 6(𝑝 − 2𝑞)
Method 2:
6𝑝 − 12𝑞
= 6𝑝 − (6 × 2)𝑞
= 6(𝑝 − 2𝑞)(taking 6 as common)
(iii) 7𝑎2 + 14𝑎
Method 1:
7𝑎2 = 7 × 𝑎2 = 7 × 𝑎 × 𝑎
14𝑎 = 14 × 𝑎 = 7 × 2 × 𝑎 × 𝑎
So, the common factors are 7 and a
7𝑎2 + 14𝑎 = (7 × 𝑎 × 𝑎) + (7 × 2 × 𝑎)
= (7 × 𝑎)(𝑎 + 2)
= 7𝑎(𝑎 + 2)

Practice more on Factorisation Page - 7 www.embibe.com

Class- VIII-CBSE-Mathematics Factorisation

Method 2:
7𝑎2 + 14𝑎
= 7𝑎2 + (7 × 2)𝑎
= (7𝑎 × 𝑎) + (7𝑎 × 2)
= 7𝑎(𝑎 + 2)(taking 7𝑎 common)
(iv) −16𝑧 + 20𝑧 3
Method 1:
−16𝑧 = −16 × 𝑧
= −1 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 𝑧
20𝑧 3 = 20 × 𝑧 3

=2×2×5×𝑧×𝑧×𝑧
So, the common factors are 2, 2 and 𝑧
−16𝑧 + 20𝑧 3
= (−1 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 𝑧) + (2 × 2 × 5 × 𝑧 × 𝑧 × 𝑧)
Taking 2 × 2 × 𝑧 common,
= 2 × 2 × 𝑧((−1 × 2 × 2) + (5 × 𝑧 × 𝑧))
= 4𝑧(−4 + 5𝑧 2 )
Method 2:
−16𝑧 + 20𝑧 3
= (4 × −4)𝑧 + (4 × 5)𝑧 3
= 4𝑧(−4 + 5𝑧 2 )(taking 4z as common)
(v) 20𝑙 2 𝑚 + 30 𝑎⁄𝑚
Method 1:
20 𝑙 2 𝑚 = 20 × 𝑙 2 × 𝑚

Class- VIII-CBSE-Mathematics Factorisation

=2×2×5×l×l×𝑚
30 alm = 30 × 𝑎 × l × 𝑚

=2×3×5×𝑎×l×𝑚
So, 20𝑙 2 m = 2 × 2 × 5 × l × l × m
30 alm = 2 × 3 × 5 × a × l × m
So, 2, 5, l and m are the common factors.
Now,
20𝑙 2 m + 30 alm = (2 × 2 × 5 × l × l × m) + (2 × 3 × 5 × a × l × m)
Taking 2 × 5 × l × m common
= 2 × 5 × l × m (2 × 1) + (3 × 𝑎)
= 10lm(2l + 3a)
Method 2:
20 𝑙 2 𝑚 + 30 alm
= (10 × 2)𝑙 × 𝑙 × 𝑚 + (10 × 3) a × l × m
Taking 10 × l × m as common,
= 10 × l × m(2l + 3𝑎)
= 10lm(2l + 3𝑎)
(vi) 5𝑥 2 𝑦 − 15𝑥𝑦 2
Method 1:
5𝑥 2 𝑦 = 5 × 𝑥 × 𝑥 × 𝑦
15 𝑥𝑦 2 = 15 × 𝑥 × 𝑦 2
=3×5×𝑥×𝑦×𝑦

So, 5, 𝑥 and 𝑦 are the common factors.

Now,
5𝑥 2 𝑦 − 15𝑥𝑦 2 = (5 × 𝑥 × 𝑥 × 𝑦) − (3 × 5 × 𝑥 × 𝑦 × 𝑦)
Taking 5 × 𝑥 × 𝑦 common
= 5 × 𝑥 × 𝑦(𝑥 − (3 × 𝑦))
= 5𝑥𝑦(𝑥 − 3𝑦)
Method 2:
5𝑥 2 𝑦 − 15𝑥𝑦 2 = 5𝑥 2 𝑦 − 5 × 3 × 𝑥𝑦 2
Taking 5 as common
= 5(𝑥 2 𝑦 − 3𝑥𝑦 2 )
= 5((𝑥𝑦 × 𝑥) − (𝑥𝑦 × 3𝑦))
Taking 𝑥𝑦 as common
= 5𝑥𝑦(𝑥 − 3𝑦)
(vii) 10 𝑎2 − 15 𝑏 2 + 20 𝑐 2
Method 1:
10𝑎2 = 10 × 𝑎2 = 2 × 5 × 𝑎2 = 2 × 5 × 𝑎 × 𝑎
15𝑏 2 = 15 × 𝑏 2 = 3 × 5 × 𝑏 2 = 3 × 5 × 𝑏 × 𝑏
20𝑐 2 = 20 × 𝑐 2 = 2 × 2 × 5 × 𝑐 2 = 2 × 2 × 5 × 𝑐 × 𝑐
So, 5 is the common factor.
10𝑎2 − 15𝑏 2 + 20𝑐 2
= (2 × 5 × 𝑎 × 𝑎) − (3 × 5 × 𝑏 × 𝑏) + (2 × 2 × 5 × 𝑐 × 𝑐)
= 5 × ((2 × 𝑎 × 𝑎) − (3 × 𝑏 × 𝑏) + (2 × 2 × 𝑐 × 𝑐))
= 5 × (2𝑎2 − 3𝑏 2 + 4𝑐 2 )
= 5(2𝑎2 − 3𝑏 2 + 4𝑐 2 )
Method 2:
10 𝑎2 − 15 𝑏 2 + 20 𝑐 2
= (5 × 2)𝑎2 − (5 × 3)𝑏 2 + (5 × 4)𝑐 2
Taking 5 common,
= 5(2𝑎2 − 3𝑏 2 + 4𝑐 2 )

= −1 × 2 × 2 × 𝑎 × 𝑎
4𝑎𝑏 = 4 × 𝑎 × 𝑏 = 2 × 2 × 𝑎 × 𝑏
4𝑐𝑎 = 4 × 𝑐 × 𝑎 = 2 × 2 × 𝑐 × 𝑎
So, 2, 2 and 𝑎 are the common factors.
−4𝑎2 + 4𝑎𝑏 − 4𝑐𝑎
= (−1 × 2 × 2 × 𝑎 × 𝑎) + (2 × 2 × 𝑎 × 𝑏) − (2 × 2 × 𝑐 × 𝑎)
= 2 × 2 × 𝑎 × ((−1 × 𝑎) + 𝑏 − 𝑐)
= 4𝑎(−𝑎 + 𝑏 − 𝑐)
Method 2:
−4𝑎2 + 4𝑎𝑏 − 4 𝑐𝑎
Taking 4 common,
= 4(−𝑎2 + 𝑎𝑏 − 𝑐𝑎)
= 4((−𝑎 × 𝑎) + (𝑎 × 𝑏) − (𝑐 × 𝑎))
Taking a common,
= 4𝑎(−𝑎 + 𝑏 − 𝑐)
(ix) 𝑥 2 𝑦𝑧 + 𝑥𝑦 2 𝑧 + 𝑥𝑦𝑧 2
Method 1:
𝑥 2 𝑦𝑧 = 𝑥 2 × 𝑦 × 𝑧 = 𝑥 × 𝑥 × 𝑦 × 𝑧
𝑥 2 𝑦𝑧 = 𝑥 × 𝑦 2 × 𝑧 = 𝑥 × 𝑦 × 𝑦 × 𝑧
𝑥𝑦𝑧 2 = 𝑥 × 𝑦 × 𝑧 2 = 𝑥 × 𝑦 × 𝑧 × 𝑧
So, 𝑥, 𝑦 and 𝑧 are the common factors.
𝑥 2 𝑦𝑧 + 𝑥𝑦 2 𝑧 + 𝑥𝑦𝑧 2
= (𝑥 × 𝑥 × 𝑦 × 𝑧) + (𝑥 × 𝑦 × 𝑦 × 𝑧)(𝑥 × 𝑦 × 𝑧 × 𝑧)

Taking 𝑥𝑦𝑧 common,
= 𝑥𝑦𝑧(𝑥 + 𝑦 + 𝑧)
(x) 𝑎𝑥 2 𝑦 + 𝑏𝑥𝑦 2 + 𝑐𝑥𝑦𝑧
Method 1:
𝑎𝑥 2 𝑦 = 𝑎 × 𝑥 2 × 𝑦 = 𝑎 × 𝑥 × 𝑥 × 𝑦
𝑏𝑥𝑦 2 = 𝑏 × 𝑥 × 𝑦 2 = 𝑏 × 𝑥 × 𝑦 × 𝑦
𝑐𝑥𝑦𝑧 = 𝑐 × 𝑥 × 𝑦 × 𝑧
So, 𝑥 and 𝑦 are the common factors.
𝑎𝑥 2 𝑦 + 𝑏𝑥𝑦 2 + 𝑐𝑥𝑦𝑧
= (𝑎 × 𝑥 × 𝑥 × 𝑦) + (𝑏 × 𝑥 × 𝑦 × 𝑦) + (𝑐 × 𝑥 × 𝑦 × 𝑧)
= 𝑥 × 𝑦(𝑎 × 𝑥) + (𝑏 × 𝑦) + (𝑐 × 𝑧)
