(Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis)
Overview of
Research
Pre-Exposure
Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a
medication shown to lower
the risk of contracting HIV
from sexual activity or
needle use by about 99%
when taken daily.
Overview of
Research
How does this pill work?
What PrEP does is, if you
take a pill, the components of the
drug will protect the immune
system, by preventing the HIV to
replicate itself in the CD4 cells.
Since HIV can’t replicate, the
immune system can clear it from
the patient’s body, preventing a
permanent infection.
Overview of
Research
This pill is very small, but the hard
work of the people behind this pill
has always been very large.
Behind this small pill, is a team of
people who dedicated their lives to
make the lives of people better.

RESEARCH
Overview of
Research
RESEARCH
is the diligent systematic inquiry into nature and society to
validate and refine existing knowledge and to generate new
knowledge (Naidoo, 2011).
Overview of
Research
RESEARCH is a systematic process of
gathering information to answer the right
question that will benefit the common good.

Overview of
Research
In the journey of research, there is never a wrong
answer, only a better understanding. Sometimes it will
not lead what you expected it to, but it might lead you
elsewhere.

Can you give me the most difficult
problem you have encountered as a
student/ youth
in the last 4 months?
Problem Selection and Characteristics
✔Problem Selection is the very first step a
researcher should do and this process should be
given utmost attention and time preparation.
Problem Selection and Characteristics
✔This problem must have the seal of originality
and uniqueness and if possible, the problem
should be a first of its kind.
Problem Selection and Characteristics
✔A researcher should decide for a research
suited to his ability, capability and potential or
suited to the number of researchers available to
work for the problem where they can fully show
cooperation, collaboration and thinking ability.
Sources of Good Research Problem
✔The research problem must be chosen by the
researcher himself. Generally, the problem must
be within his/her area of interest, specialization
and competence.
Sources of Good Research Problem
1. Actual Problems Encountered
2. Field of Specialization
3. Analysis of an Area of Knowledge
4. Consisting of an existing practices and needs
5. Absence or lack of information resulting to a gap on
one’s knowledge and contradictory
Areas that are Researchable
✔Decision on what the problem to work on must
also take into consideration the identifiable
researchable areas with due respect to the
needs of present generation and time.
Areas that are Researchable
• Some research may be common, repeatedly searched,
and has no sense of novelty. A research problem is
denied for its lack of available supporting data. The
availability or scarcity of participants may also be a
factor for disapproving the conduct of research study.
Areas that are Researchable
✔To avoid these scenarios, researchers are advised to
select problem from researchable areas that may
address the call of time, need and situation.
Assignment: (By Group)
• Directions: Surf the net, read scientific journals,
magazines, or interview a research expert. Submit at
least 5 prospective research problems for critiquing
and approval of your research teacher. Make sure that
each problem has its corresponding reason as to why
you choose the problem.
