CHAPTER THREE

METHODOOGY

This chapter deals with the procedures that was taken in carrying out the study. It was

organized under the following subheadings: Design of the study, area of the study, population

for the study, sample and sampling techniques, instrument for data collection, validation of

the instrument, reliability of the instrument, method of data collection and method of data

analysis.

Research Design

The study adopted the descriptive survey as it sought to investigate the perspectives of

administrative staffs and lecturers at the university of Benin’s faculty of education on

application of modern technology for efficient data management. This research design is best

suitable for this study because it facilitates the collection of original data and describe the

conditions as they exist in their natural setting. It also helps to homogenize the population

and guarantees that all participants have equal chance of being selected for the study.

Population of the Study

The population of this study consists of all faculty members and staffs (academic and non-

academic staffs) in the faculty of education, University of Benin, Benin-City in the 2021&

2022 academic session. There are two hundred and fifty-six (256) staffs from the 9 (nine)

Departments in the Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin-City. (Office of the

Faculty Officer, Faculty of Education, January, 2023).

Sample and Sampling Techniques

The simple random technique was adopted by the study to select a sample size of 150 (one

hundred and fifty). This is a technique of a statistical population in which each member of the

1
subset has an equal probability of being chosen to be among the study sample. The researcher

used a balloting system in selecting five (5) departments in the Faculty of Education,

University of Benin out of nine (9) departments in the faculty. Thirty (30) staffs each were

randomly selected from the five departments to make up the sample for the study. The names

of the selected departments are;

1. Adult and Non-Formal

2. Educational Management

3. Curriculum and Instructional Technology

4. Educational foundation

5. Vocational and Technical Education

Research Instrument

Questionnaire was developed by the researcher to elicit information from the

respondents. The questionnaire had two sections; Section A and Section B.

Section A dealt with the personal data of the respondents while section B dealt with items

bordering on utilization of modern technology for data management in the faculty of

education, university of Benin. The 25-items in the questionnaire were put into clusters as

follows: Cluster A involve the extent to which modern technological facilities are utilized

by faculty members and staffs which contained items (1 – 7), Cluster B bordered on the type

of modern technological facilities used by faculty members and staffs which formed items

(8– 12), Cluster C dealt on the challenges to the use of modern technology by faculty

members and staffs, had items (13 – 18) and Cluster D dealt with the strategies that could be

employed to enhance the utilization of modern technology by faculty members and staffs

with (19– 25) items respectively.

2
The items were placed on a four-point rating scale of Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree and

Strongly Disagree for questions 1,3 and 4. While question 2 was Very great Extent, great

extent, low extent and very low extent.

Validation of the Instrument

The instrument was validated by three experts, the researchers’ supervisors and two experts

in Department of Educational Management, University of Benin, Benin City. The opinions,

suggestions and recommendations of these experts were used to produce the final instrument.

These screening processes will ensure the content and construct validity of the instrument.

Reliability of the Instrument

The test re-test method was used to determine the reliability of the instrument. The

instrument was administered twice for a pilot study. Later, the measures of the two set of data

were correlated and a Pearson ‘r’ statistics was used to determine the reliability of the index.

Method of Data Collection

The researcher used direct delivery method in collecting data. This helped the researcher

collect the questionnaire immediately after completion. It equally facilitated hundred percent

returns of the copies of the questionnaire distributed. Copies of the questionnaire was

administered to the respondents with the help of four research assistants. This is to ensure

quicker coverage of the education zone.

Data analysis

The data collected for this study was analysed using mean score and standard deviation to

address the research questions.

3
The cut-off was 2.5 that is any item with a mean score of 2.5 and above was considered

accepted while any item with a mean score below 2.5 was considered rejected. The t-test was

used to test the null hypotheses at .05 level of significant.
