Report On Water Filtration Process

⮚ Introduction:
The water filtration process is essential for ensuring safe and clean water for
domestic use. This process involves several stages, starting from the collection of
raw water from a dam to its distribution to households. Each stage is carefully
managed to remove impurities, pathogens, and other harmful substances, ensuring
compliance with health and safety standards.
⮚ Objectives:

▪ To understand the process of Water Treatment and Purification.

▪ To gain a deeper understanding about the process, interact with the

experts

⮚ Process of Water Filtration::

1. Water Collection: Water is gathered from natural sources like reservoirs using large intake
pipes and powerful pumps.
2. Coagulation and Flocculation: Chemicals, such as aluminum sulfate, are added to the water
to bind tiny particles into larger clumps called flocs. Chlorine gas is also added at this stage to
disinfect the water.
3. Sedimentation: The water is allowed to sit in large tanks, where the heavier flocs settle at
the bottom, forming sludge that is periodically removed.
4. Filtration: The clarified water is passed through layers of sand, gravel, and activated carbon
filters to remove smaller particles and improve taste and odor.
5. Disinfection: To ensure the removal of any remaining pathogens, disinfectants like
chlorine, ozone, or ultraviolet (UV) light are used.
6. Storage: The treated water is stored in reservoirs or water towers, which help maintain
water pressure and ensure a continuous supply.
7. Quality Monitoring: Water quality is constantly monitored for various factors, including
turbidity, pH, microbial content, and chemical composition, ensuring it meets health standards.
8. Distribution: Finally, the treated water is distributed to homes, businesses, and other
consumers via a network of pipes, pumps, and storage systems, ensuring safe and reliable
access to clean

water.
⮚ Instruments Using In Lab For Water Testing:
o pH meter: Measures the acid and alkali numbers
o EC meter and salinity meter: Measures the electrical conductivity and
salinity of water
o Oxygen meter: Measures water-soluble oxygen
o Caldera device: Determines nitrogen in water and wastewater
o Turbidity meter: Measures the turbidity of liquids, which is a measure of
cloudiness in liquids
⮚ Learning Outcomes:
1. Understand the water treatment process.
2. Learn about filtration, sedimentation, and disinfection methods.
3. Recognize the importance of clean water for health and environment.
4. Observe the role of technology in water purification.
5. Gain awareness of water conservation and sustainability practices.

⮚ Conclusion:

● The industrial visit to the water treatment plant was highly

insightful and informative. It provided a comprehensive
understanding of the processes involved in treating and
distributing clean, safe water. Observing the operations firsthand
reinforced the importance of efficient water management and the
use of advanced technologies to meet growing demands while
ensuring environmental sustainability.

● This visit not only deepened our theoretical knowledge but also
highlighted the practical challenges and solutions implemented in
real-world scenarios. It underscored the critical role water treatment
plants play in public health, industrial applications, and
environmental protection. Overall, this experience has broadened
our perspective on the significance of sustainable water practices
and inspired us to contribute to this vital field in meaningful ways.
