INTRO

"Bigyan ninyo ako ng anim na buwan. Kung hindi ko magawa, ako ang magre-resign."

These words were spoken by Rodrigo Duterte as he took office as president of the
Philippines in 2016, expressing his confidence in addressing the country's drug
problem swiftly. Some citizens viewed his "iron fist" approach as necessary for
enforcing law and order, while others argued that the rights of innocent people
should not be compromised in the process.

The war on drugs campaign led to significant casualties, with 6,252 deaths
officially recorded in anti-drug operations from 2016 to 2022. However, human
rights organizations suggest the actual count may be much higher, estimating
between 12,000 to 30,000 deaths—many allegedly involving extrajudicial killings by
police and vigilantes

These numbers might still be underestimated, as unreported cases, like those

involving individuals in lower-income communities or minors, could remain hidden,
potentially including the tragic case of "Angela" (not her real name).

OUTRO
Angela's case prove that there is no greater agony than bearing an untold story
inside you.

As we reflect on the complexities surrounding Duterte's war on drugs, it is clear

that the campaign has left a profound impact on Filipino society. The tension
between the need for law enforcement and the protection of human rights remains a
contentious issue. While many supported the swift actions taken to combat drug-
related crimes, the staggering death toll—officially recorded at over 6,252 and
potentially much higher—raises critical questions about accountability and justice.

The ongoing discourse among human rights advocates underscores the need for a
balanced approach that prioritizes the safety of all citizens while ensuring that
innocent lives are not caught in the crossfire. As we look to the future, it is
imperative that we seek solutions that protect both public safety and human
dignity, fostering an environment where justice is served without sacrificing the
rights of the vulnerable.

In this era of complexity, the voices of the victims and their families must be
heard, reminding us that behind every statistic lies a personal story, urging us to
reconsider our approach to crime, punishment, and rehabilitation in the
Philippines.
