The colors that are now in fashion ‫הצבעים שעכשיו באופנה‬

Hà-tsvà-im shé-àh-shàv bà-of-nà The negative

Yésh li ràk tsà-hov, à-dom, vé-hoom.
I want to buy ‫אני רוצה לקנות‬
À-ni ro-tsà lik-not ‫לא באופנה‬
a shirt, a skirt, and pants ‫ ומכנסיים‬,‫ חצאית‬,‫חולצה‬ Lo bà-of-nà
hool-tsà, hà-tsà-it, oo-mih-nà-sà-yim Not in fashion

bé-shà-hor vé-là-vàn.
Kén o lo?
Fine, we’ll go to the mall in the morning. .‫ נלך לקניון בבוקר‬,‫טוב‬
Yes or no?
Tov, né-léh là-kàn-yon bà-bo-kér.
‫לא חלבי‬
Noa, you started by asking Rina what present she wants for her
birthday. Let’s hear that in two parts. The first part is “what present Lo hà-là-vi
do you want” Nondairy
‫איזו מתנה את רוצה‬
Éy-zo mà-tà-nà àt ro-tsà
‫איזו מתנה את רוצה‬
The word for a present, ‫מתנה‬, is a feminine noun. The word for
Only, just ‫רק‬
“what”, ‫איזו‬, refers to ‫ מתנה‬and agrees with its feminine gender.
Therefore we hear Ràk

‫איזו‬
Éy-zo ‫יש לי רק צהוב‬
‫איזו‬ Yésh li ràk tsà-hov
I only have yellow
If the noun was masculine, we would hear
‫אני רק עכשיו ראיתי‬
‫איזה‬
À-ni ràk àh-shàv rà-ee-ti
Éy-zé
‫איזה‬ I just now saw
!‫רק רגע‬
Let’s see an example. To ask “what article of clothing”, we would
say Ràk ré-gà!
Just a minute!
‫איזה בגד‬
Éy-zé bé-géd ‫נועה אוכלת רק ירקות‬
‫איזה בגד‬ No-à o-hé-lét ràk yé-rà-kot
So ‫ בגד‬is a single article of clothing, and in plural clothes are ‫בגדים‬. Noa eats only vegetables

The second part of your question, Noa, was “for the birthday”,
Rina’s birthday that is.
‫ליום ההולדת‬
Lé-yom hà-hoo-lé-dét
‫ליום ההולדת‬
A birthday is ‫יום הולדת‬. Here we had for the birthday, so it’s
‫ליום ההולדת‬.

Beginner Level

Rina answered that she wants new clothes. Let’s hear that
‫אני רוצה בגדים חדשים‬ Future Tense
À-ni ro-tsà bgà-dim hà-dà-shim
‫אני רוצה בגדים חדשים‬ To go ‫ללכת‬
The adjective here, ‫חדשים‬, agrees in both gender and plurality with Là-lé-hét
the subject ‫בגדים‬. If the subject was shoes, ‫נעליים‬, which is a
feminine noun, we would hear ‫חדשות‬ I’ll go ‫אני אלך‬
‫אני רוצה נעליים חדשות‬ À-ni é-léh
À-ni ro-tsà nà-à-là-yim hà-dà-shot You’ll go (m. sg.) ‫אתה תלך‬
‫אני רוצה נעליים חדשות‬ À-tà té-léh
Noa was surprised that Rina wants more clothes. She said “but you You’ll go (f. sg.) ‫את תלכי‬
already have many clothes in your closet”. Noa, how did you say Àt tél-hi
“but you already have” He’ll go (m. sg.) ‫הוא ילך‬
‫אבל כבר יש לך‬ Hoo yé-léh
À-vàl kvàr yésh làh She’ll go (f. sg.) ‫היא תלך‬
‫אבל כבר יש לך‬ Hee té-léh
We’ll go ‫אנחנו נלך‬
‫ אבל‬mean but. ‫ כבר‬means already, and ‫ יש לך‬means you have.
À-nàh-noo né-léh
The word for many is ‫הרבה‬. The word for closet is ‫ארון‬. So, Noa,
You’ll go (m. pl.) ‫אתם תלכו‬
let’s hear how you said “You have many clothes in your closet”.
À-tém tél-hoo
‫יש לך הרבה בגדים בארון‬ You’ll go (f. pl.) ‫אתן תלכנה‬
Yésh làh hàr-bé bgà-dim bà-à-ron À-tén té-léh-nà
‫יש לך הרבה בגדים בארון‬
They’ll go (m. pl.) ‫הם ילכו‬
Rina protested that her clothes are not in fashion. Hém yél-hoo
‫הם לא באופנה‬ They’ll go (f. pl.) ‫הן תלכנה‬
Hém lo bà-of-nà Hén té-léh-nà
‫הם לא באופנה‬
This is an example of the negative. If we wanted to say that “they ‫ מחר נלך לקניון‬,‫רינה‬
are in fashion” we would simply say Ri-nà, mà-hàr né-léh là-kàn-yon
‫הם באופנה‬ Rina, tomorrow [we] will go to the mall
Hém bà-of-nà ‫אחרי הארוחה אני אלך לישון‬
‫הם באופנה‬ À-hà-réy hà-à-roo-hà à-ni é-léh li-shon
‫ הם‬means “they” or “they are”, referring to the clothes. And After dinner I will go to sleep
remember that Hebrew doesn’t use the verb to be in the present
tense.
We see another example of the word ‫ הם‬when Rina said that the
colors that are now in fashion are black and white
‫הצבעים שעכשיו באופנה הם שחור ולבן‬
Hà-tsvà-im shé-àh-sàv bà-of-nà hém shà-hor vé-là-vàn
‫הצבעים שעכשיו באופנה הם שחור ולבן‬
Rina went on to say that she only has yellow, red, and brown. You
should already know how to say “I have”
‫יש לי‬

And “I only have”

‫יש לי רק‬
Yésh li ràk
Already ‫כבר‬
‫יש לי רק‬ Kvàr

So, let’s hear “I only have yellow, red, and brown.”

‫כבר יש לך הרבה נעליים‬
‫ וחום‬,‫ אדום‬,‫יש לי רק צהוב‬ Kvàr yésh làh hàr-bé nà-à-là-yim
Yésh li ràk tsà-hov, à-dom, vé-hoom
You already have many shoes
‫ וחום‬,‫ אדום‬,‫יש לי רק צהוב‬
!‫כבר חמש‬
Rina said “I want to buy”
Kvàr hà-mésh!
‫אני רוצה לקנות‬ It's already five [o'clock]
À-ni ro-tsà lik-not
!‫די כבר‬
‫אני רוצה לקנות‬
Dày kvàr!
“A shirt, a skirt, and pants” Enough already!
‫ ומכנסיים‬,‫ חצאית‬,‫חולצה‬ ‫אני כבר באה‬
Hool-tsà, hà-tsà-it, oo-mih-nà-sà-yim À-ni kvàr bà-à
‫ ומכנסיים‬,‫ חצאית‬,‫חולצה‬
I’m coming in a minute
And Noa, you answered “Fine, we’ll go to the mall in the morning”,
let’s hear how you said that
‫ נלך לקניון בבוקר‬,‫טוב‬
Tov, né-léh là-kàn-yon bà-bo-kér
‫ נלך לקניון בבוקר‬,‫טוב‬ Now ‫עכשיו‬
Àh-shàv
‫ טוב‬means good or fine in colloquial way. The verb here is ‫נלך‬,
which is the verb to go in the future. Let’s practice this verb.
Suppose I wanted to say “we will go to eat”, I would say ?‫ את יכולה לבוא עכשיו‬,‫נועה‬
No-à, àt yé-ho-là là-vo àh-shàv?
‫אנחנו נלך לאכול‬
À-nàh-noo né-léh lé-é-hol Noa, can you come now?
‫אנחנו נלך לאכול‬ ?‫מה השעה עכשיו‬
Noa, could you tell us again how you said “to the mall” Mà hà-shà-à àh-shàv?
What is the time now?
‫לקניון‬
Là-kàn-yon ‫הצבעים שעכשיו באופנה‬
‫לקניון‬ Hà-tsvà-im shé-àh-shàv bà-of-nà
The colors that are now in fashion
‫ קניון‬is a mall. This relatively new word in Hebrew is very popular
nonetheless. Finally, Noa, you said in the morning. That’s ‫בבוקר‬.
Morning is ‫בוקר‬. In the morning is ‫בבוקר‬. So, let’s hear the entire
sentence one more time: “Fine, we’ll go to the mall in the morning”
‫ נלך לקניון בבוקר‬,‫טוב‬
That’s it. For a complete transcript and explanation of today’s
dialog, and for additional examples of clothes and colors, download
the lesson guide from our website at http://hebrewpodcasts.com.
Before we finish, let’s listen again to the entire dialog. We’ll pause
after each line for you to repeat it out loud.

Transcription
We’ll use transcription in our lesson guides to help you read new Hebrew words. You should read the transcription as if it was English.
We’ll use hyphens to help the pronunciation. We’ll use é and à to better approximate the Hebrew sounds. You should pronounce those as
you would in French. Are you familiar with the expression déjà vu, or the word résumé? If so, then you should pronounce these two
accents accordingly. Otherwise, pronounce é like the e in let and pronounce à like the a in bark or the u in up.
Finally we’ll use h (the letter h with an underscore) to denote the sound of the letter Het (‫ )ח‬or the loose version of the letter Kaf (‫)כ‬. You
should refer to lesson 2 to hear this sound.
