Foundation Engineering
1. Determine the ultimate bearing capacity of a mat foundation measuring 55 ft long by 40 ft wide
placed 7.5 ft below the surface and resting upon a saturated clay stratum with Cu= 1855 lb/ft
and φ= 0o.

2. What will be the net allowable bearing capacity of a mat foundation 16m by 9m wide
embedded 3m into a dry stratum with a corrected SPT to 50% efficiency N60= 12. It is described
that the allowable settlement is 33mm.

Calculate the settlement of mat foundation due to 18’ clay layer and also find the angle of rotation.
4. Refer to the pile in clay shown in figure-1, for the pile, calculate the skin resistance (Qs) by
a) The α method
b) The γ method ( λ= 0.136)
c) The β method, use φ= 300 for all clay layers. The top 8 m of clay is normally
consolidated. The bottom clay layer has an OCR= 3
(Note: Diameter of the pile is 340 mm)

Saturated clay, Cu (1) = 25 kN/m2

3m γ= 15 kN/m3; α = 0.82

5m Cu (1) = 25 kN/m2
γsat= 21 kN/m3; α = 0.82

Clay, Cu (2) = 120 kN/m3
