Exercise sheet N°1 (Part 2: Binary Relations and functions)

Exercise 1 (G3, G1)

Let ℛ be a relation defined on ℝ as follows:


𝑥ℛ𝑦 ⟺ 𝑥 3 − 𝑦 3 = 3(𝑥 − 𝑦)
1. Show that ℛ is an equivalence relation.
2. Determine 𝑐𝑙(0), 𝑐𝑙(−2) and 𝑐𝑙(3).
3. Let 𝑎 ∈ ℝ. Determine |𝑐𝑙(𝑎)| according to the values of 𝑎.
Exercise 2 (G4, G2, G5)

We define the relation ℜ on ℤ∗ × ℤ∗ as follows:


(𝑎, 𝑏)ℜ(𝑐, 𝑑) ⟺ 𝑎𝑑 = 𝑐𝑏
1. Prove that ℜ is an equivalence relation.
2. Determine 𝑐𝑙(2,4).
Exercise 3 (G4, G2, G5)

We define on ℕ∗ the relation ℛ as follows:


𝑥ℛ𝑦 ⟺ ∃𝑛 ∈ ℕ∗ , 𝑦 = 𝑥 𝑛
1. Show that ℛ is an order relation.
2. Is this order total?
Exercise 4 (*)
On ℝ∗+ , we define the relation ℛ by:

Prove that ℛ is a total order relation.
Exercise 5 (G3, G1)

We define the relation ℛ on ℝ2 as follows:


(𝑎, 𝑏)ℛ(𝑐, 𝑑) ⟺ |𝑎 − 𝑐| ≤ 𝑑 − 𝑏
1. Show that ℛ is an order relation
2. Is this order total?

Exercise 6 (G4, G2, G5)
Consider the function 𝑓 from [0,1] to [0,2] defined by: 𝑓(𝑥) = 2 − 𝑥,
and the function 𝑔 from [−1,1] to [0,2] defined by: 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 + 1.
1. Determine:

𝑓 (2) , 𝑓 ({0, 3 , 1}), 𝑓 −1 (0), 𝑓 −1 ({1, 3}) , 𝑔({−1,1}), 𝑔([−1,1]), and 𝑔−1 ([0,2]).

Exercise 7 (G3, G1)
I. Let 𝑓 be a function defined as follows:
𝑓 ∶ ℝ2 ⟶ ℝ2
(𝑥, 𝑦) ⟼ 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = (𝑥 + 𝑦, 𝑥𝑦)
1. Calculate 𝑓(2,3) and 𝑓(3,2).
2. Is there an element (𝑎, 𝑏) ∈ ℝ2 such that 𝑓(𝑎, 𝑏) = (3,5)?
3. Is the function 𝑓 injective? Surjective? Bijective? Justify
II. Let 𝑔 be a function defined as follows:
𝑔 ∶ ℝ2 ⟶ ℝ2
(𝑥, 𝑦) ⟼ 𝑔(𝑥, 𝑦) = (𝑥 + 𝑦, 𝑥 − 𝑦)
Show that the function 𝑔 is bijective.
Exercise 8 (*)
1. We define the function 𝑓 as follows:
𝑓: ℝ ⟶ [1, +∞[
𝑥 ⟼ 𝑓(𝑥) = √1 + 𝑒 𝑥 .
Show that f is bijective.
2. We consider the function 𝑔 defined by:
𝑔: [1, +∞[ ⟶ ℝ
𝑥 ⟼ 𝑔(𝑥) = ln(𝑥 2 − 1).
Determine 𝑓 ∘ 𝑔 and 𝑔 ∘ 𝑓. What can you conclude?
