Course Description
This interdisciplinary course engages
students to confront the realities brought
about by science and technology in society.
Such realities pervade the personal, the
public, and the global aspects of our living
and are integral to human development.
Scientific knowledge and technological
development happen in the context of
society with all its socio-political, cultural,
economic, and philosophical underpinnings
at play. This course seeks to instill reflective
knowledge in the students that they are
able to live the good life and display ethical
decision-making in the face of scientific and
technological advancement. This course
includes mandatory topics on climate
change and environmental awareness.

Course Outcomes
Articulate the impacts of science and
technology on society, specifically
Philippine society;
Imbibe the importance of science and
technology in the preservation of the
environment and the development of
the Filipino nation;
Creatively present the importance and
contributions of science and technology
to society; and
Illustrate how the social media and
information age impacts their lives and
their understanding of climate change.
Module Overview
Hello, dear students! Welcome to a new school year! This module deals
with the general concepts and historical developments of Science and
Technology. It focuses on topics about realities and events which
changed the course of Science and Technology and, at the same time,
how it transformed society.

Module Objectives/Outcomes
Discuss the interactions between S&T and society throughout history;
Discuss how scientific and technological developments affect society
and the environment; and
Articulate ways by which society is transformed by science and
technology; and
LESSON 1: HISTORICAL ANTECEDENTS OF SCIENCE
AND TECHNOLOGY

INTRODUCTION
It is a well-established fact that science and technology impact all aspects of our lives. Science and

technology are associated in all means with modernity and are considered essential for rapid development.

The state of science and technology determines the socio-economic progress of a country. A country that is

not able to implement science and technology would not progress and reap the benefit of developments.

ABSTRACTION
The state of science and technology of a country largely determines its socio-economic progress. In many

countries (including the Philippines), science and technology have undergone a tedious development

process. History will show traces of indigenous technology used by our forefathers as early as pre-historic

times. There is no doubt that with the passing of the years, science and technology have improved immensely

with humankind's progress. Breakthroughs in science and technology have improved people's lives across the

globe, but they also posed serious concerns to humankind because of the improper implementation of

technology.

Therefore, the challenge is for us to determine the type of future we need to have and then create relevant

technologies that will make the world a wonderful place for us to live in.

LESSON 2: SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION

INTRODUCTION
Human beings have embarked on scientific activities to know and understand everything. They have

persistently observed and studied the natural and the physical world to find meanings and seek answers to

many questions. This lesson will give light to the development of science and scientific ideas in the heart of

society. This lesson's goal is to articulate ways by which society is transformed by science and technology.

ACTIVITY
Research and record the steps of the scientific method.

Once you have recorded the steps of the scientific method, design a simple experiment based on the steps.

You don’t actually have to carry out the experiment as the point is to understand the importance of the

scientific method and its role in scientific breakthroughs over time.

ABSTRACTION
The scientific revolution is a golden age in the history of science. It marked the birth of science as a discipline

and field of inquiry and gave birth to the development of the scientific method. It was a time in the history of

science where many scientific ideas and discoveries, which were considered innovative and useful, were

developed. Some of these ideas were also controversial in the scientific community and the political arena.

The scientific revolution significantly changed how people study science and do scientific activities. It

inspired human creativity and critical thinking, moving away from thought experiments to data-driven and

experiment-based ideas.

Many intellectuals made essential contributions to science during the period of the scientific revolution.

Nicolaus Copernicus developed a universe model in which everything moved around a single center at

unvarying rates. He placed the Sun in the center of the universe, and all the planets were surrounding or

orbiting it. Copernicus’ model of planets orbiting around the Sun automatically positioned the planets into a

logical sequence. Charles Darwin made a significant contribution to the field of evolutionary biology and

philosophy of science. His theory of evolution by natural selection is beneficial in many fields until now.

Sigmund Freud developed the idea of psychoanalysis that helped in understanding human behavior,

especially neurological conditions.
