1 INTRODUCTION
This report covers the design of MLA marine loading arm TAL-25-JF-9100A/B/C steel structure to be installed
in Tanzania.
A 3D FEM analysis has been carried out using SAP2000 version 22.2.1, a certified structural computer
program, licensed worldwide through the Computer and Structures Inc.
The structure can be described as composed by 4 main elements: one riser, one inboard, one outboard and
one panthograph.
Structural Steel Design has been performed using EN 1993-1-1:2005 - Eurocode 3: Design of steel
structures, and the calculation has been performed in accordance with provisions of the OCMF standard -
Design and Construction Specification for MLA.
3 MATERIAL
Structural steel
The following materials are selected for structural design:
EN 10025-2 Gr. S355J0 (Yield strength = 355 Mpa; Tensile strength = 450 MPa)
Used for all structural members except the riser, base plate and stiffners.

4 ANALYSIS PROCEDURE
According to OCIMF the allowable stress design of structure at different positions and materials have been
considered as follows:

shown here below:
According to table above, the maximum actual stress has been verified in this report for the different modes
considered.
b. As per par. 4.2.5 of OCIMF (Stress Analysis) an additional check on allowable stress of structure has
been done, considering the stress factors given in table 4.4-Safety Factors.

The stress results from structural calculation model have been compared with the two criteria (a and b)
here above described. The results have been attached in this report in the dedicated paragraph.
In addition, according to par. 4.2.5 of OCIMF, a safety factor of 2,00 against instability has been applied into
Sap2000 as γm1 safety factor:
5 DESIGN CRITERIA
The MLA TAL-25-JF-9100A/B/C is composed by four main structural members:
- Riser
- Inboard
- Outboard
- Pantograph
The riser has been modelled as fixed at base in both x and y direction.
All the elements have been set as fixed, except some moment releases applied to some joint constraints
as better specified in the following pages.

According to OCMF, the calculation has been performed considering the structure configuration at different
attitudes:

- Manoeuvring
- Connected
- Emergency release
- Maintenance
- Hydrostatic Test.
This report covers the calculation of the whole MLA and summarize the results for all of the analysed
attitudes.

Moreover, additional dead loads have been applied joints elements connected to structure which represent
additional pipes element (for example pipe bending).
As far as it concerns the self-weight of steel plates welded on inboard and outboard, it has been calculated
directly by the program by using shell elements with 0,04m of thickness and steel material S355.
Here below are shown the input data for process pipes of inboard and outboard. The two pipes are those
with the cyan color in the image.
The image below shows point dead loads applied on joints, which are the same for all the position
considered.

Therefore, the acceleration used for the pseudo static analysis are:

A pseudo-static analysis has been performed in Sap2000 model for both OBE and SSE condition by
defining different load cases and load combination for OBE and SSE in both x and y direction.
Also a vertical seismic load has been considered, equal to 50% of horizontal one.
Seismic loads for this method have been applied automatically by SAP2000 for structural element modelled
into FEM 3D model, using the option for automatic generation, while for dead loads of secondary steel
elements directly applied on joints constraint, an earthquake load has been applied in both x and y direction.

Pseudo-static seismic load has been assigned by applying a gravity load in the lateral and vertical direction.

As readable above, the seismic forces are calculated by Sap2000 considering the mass sources indicated by
the user.
Masses have been automatically calculated by SAP2000 from gravitational applied load. For the stowed
position the mass source has been edited as follows:
The seismic force due to structure weight will be distributed to each element as Gravity frame loads in X, Y
and Z direction by using gravity multipliers in Sap2000 frame element load input.
Gravity multiplier is derived by dividing the acceleration given as input data by the acceleration due to gravity.

Therefore, conservatively, a temperature variation of (95 – 10) = +/- 85 °C has been applied to raiser as
thermal load into Sap2000 FEM model.
A temperature variation of (42.3-10) = 32,3 °C has been applied as thermal load on all others steel structure
frames into Sap2000 FEM model.

9 CHECKS
9.1 Allowable Drifts
According to Mechanical datasheet, horizontal drift due to wind and earthquake has been checked in both
x and y direction at the top of riser.
The combinations considered are those defined in the previous paragraph. In the Stored position, deflection
due to seismic load has been checked considering the OBE load combinations.
The riser height has been reduced by 1500mm considering that the base plate connection includes
2000mm high stiffeners. It has been assumed that the riser is fixed for the 75% of stiffeners length, therefore
the riser height considered for deflection check is 9100mm.
The table here below shows the checks for the different attitudes analysed and the following image shows
the worst actual deflection for riser in Sap2000:

In the following pages are shown the calculations for steel connections. Steel tubular sections of Inboard
and Outboard will be connected thtough full penetration weld.
Fillet welds are checked according to EN1993-1-8; the verification of full penetration butt welds is not carried
out, as it is assumed to have the same design resistance of the weaker of the parts connected.
Loads considered for the calculations come from Sap2000 3D structural model and steel materials
resistence has been reduced according to OCIMF requirements and as shown in paragraph 9.2 of this

Check methods of specific components like bolts or welds are done according to standard
Component method (Eurocode).
For the fasteners – bolts and welds – special FEM components had to be developed to model
the welds and bolts behaviour in joint. All parts of 1D members and all additional plates are
modelled as plate/walls. These elements are made of steel (metal in general) and the behaviour
of this material is significantly nonlinear.
The real stress-strain diagram of steel is replaced by the ideal plastic material for design
purposes in building practice. The advantage of ideal plastic material is, that only yield strength
and modulus of elasticity must be known to describe the material curve. The granted ductility of
construction steel is 15 %. The real usable value of limit plastic strain is 5% for ordinary design
(1993-1-5 appendix C paragraph C.8 note 1).
The stress in steel cannot exceed the yield strength when using the ideal elastic-plastic stress-
strain diagram.
CBFEM method aims to model the real state precisely. Meshes of plates / walls are not merged,
no intersections are generated between them, unlike it is used to when modelling structures and
buildings. Mesh of finite elements is generated on each individual plate independently on mesh
of other plates.

Between the meshes, special massless force interpolation constraints are added. They ensure
the connection between the edge of one plate and the surface or edge of the other plate.
This unique calculation model provides very good results – both for the point of view of precision
and of the analysis speed. The method is protected by patent.
The steel base plate is placed loosely on the concrete foundation. It is a contact element in the
analysis model – the connection resists compression fully, but does not resist tension.
Stress-strain diagram of contact between the concrete block and the base plate
Welds are modelled using a special elastoplastic element, which is added to the interpolation
links between the plates. The element respects the weld throat thickness, position and
orientation. The plasticity state is controlled by stresses in the weld throat section. The plastic
redistribution of stress in welds allows for stress peaks to be redistributed along the longer part
of the weld.
Bolted connection consists of two or more clasped plates and one or more bolts. Plates are
placed loosely on each other.
A contact element is inserted between plates in the analysis model, which acts only in
compression. No forces are carried in tension.
Shear force is taken by bearing. Special model for its transferring in the force direction only is
implemented. IDEA StatiCa Connection can check bolts for interaction of shear and tension.

The concrete block in CBFEM is modelled using Winkler-Pasternak subsoil model. The stiffness
of subsoil is determined using modulus of elasticity of concrete and effective height of subsoil.
The concrete block is not designed by CBFEM method.
Loads
End forces of member of the frame analysis model are transferred to the ends of member
segments. Eccentricities of members caused by the joint design are respected during load
transfer.
The analysis model created by CBFEM method corresponds to the real joint very precisely,
whereas the analysis of internal forces is performed on very idealised 3D FEM 1D model, where
individual beams are modelled using centrelines and the joints are modelled using immaterial
nodes.

Anchors
Anchors are checked according to EN 1992-4. The following checks are performed:
• Tensile steel resistance (Cl. 7.2.1.3) is checked for each individual anchor.
• Concrete cone failure resistance (Cl. 7.2.1.4) is checked for an anchor or a group of
anchors loaded in tension with a common concrete cone.
• Pull-out resistance (Cl. 7.2.1.5) is checked for each individual anchor with washer plate.
• Concrete blowout resistance (Cl. 7.2.1.8) is checked for a group of anchors with washer
plates near a concrete edge.
• Anchor shear steel resistance (Cl. 7.2.2.3) is checked for each individual anchor.
Anchoring with stand-off: direct is considered as shear without lever arm (Cl. 7.2.2.3.1),
and anchoring with stand-off: mortar joint is considered as shear with lever arm (Cl.
7.2.2.3.2).
• Concrete pryout failure (Cl. 7.2.2.4) is checked for a group of anchors.
• Concrete edge failure (Cl. 7.2.2.5) is checked for a group of anchors near a concrete
edge. It is assumed that the full shear load acting on a base plate is transferred via this
group of anchors.
Note that pull-out and combined pull-out and concrete failures of bonded anchors are not
checked due to missing values of shear strength of glue. Concrete splitting failure is not
checked due to missing splitting forces of post-installed anchor. These checks, if relevant, must
be verified by anchor manufacturer.

Some codes, e.g. Eurocode (EN 1993-1-1, Chapter 5.2.1), recommend a critical load multiplier higher than 15 for
bar models of structures. If the critical load multiplier is higher than 15, the code does not require a buckling check
of members.
For joints, the matter is different, and the code does not provide any specific recommendation. The design of local
buckling must be tackled in another way. Generally, the local buckling may be divided into groups:
The buckling of plates from group 1 affects the buckling shape of the whole member. Therefore, it is recommended
to apply the same rules as for these members also to these plates, i.e., consider safe critical load multiplier 15 and
higher.
Plates from group 2 affect the local buckling of the joint. For such plates, the safe boundary of critical load multiplier
15 is conservative, but specific guidance is missing in codes. The guidance is provided by research papers that
recommend a safe boundary of critical load multiplier equal to 3.

Examples of buckling shapes of plates from group 2 where the buckling can be neglected if the critical buckling
factor is higher than 3
First of all, we have to determine the minimum force amplifier to reach the elastic critical buckling, αcr using buckling
analysis. IDEA StatiCa provides the buckling factors in a result tables and the buckling shapes for each factor can
be provided in a 3D view.
The limit value for global analysis can be found in EN 1993-1-1:2005 Cl. 5.2.1.
In a case of global buckling (group 1) with a buckling factor lower than 15, one of the further measures should be
used:
• Simulate the 2nd order effects - add extra shear load perpendicular to the gusset plate as a destabilizing
force due to eccentricities with the magnitude of V = N / 10 in the location of the bolt group center;
• or strengthen the connection and recalculate the buckling analysis to ensure the critical buckling factor is
higher than 15.
In case the option one is chosen, the Stress/strain analysis should be recalculated (no more buckling analysis
needed). The overall results show the connection passes all the code-checks.

11.4 Swivel
Baretti's joints are made not to support any structural stresses apart from those due to the liquid pressure
which is the same pressure of the one in the process pipes.
The thickness of 36mm is to be considered as the minimum required from calculation, therefore 6mm for
corrosion allowance has to be added obtaining an actual thickness of 42mm.

About loads, a 4,66 MPa pressure acting on the plate top has been considered.
A 3D FEM analysis has been performed using Sap2000 structural software and a generical 3D FEM model
has been considered, not related to a particular attitude. The maximum stress obtained by running all the load
combinations provided OCIMF containing the load case “PL” (i.e. pressure load) have been compared with the
allowable stress obtained in the table at par. 9.2 for the different attitudes.
