OVERPOPULATION
BY : K R ITI M.
Overpopulation refers to a situation in which the
population of a specific geographic area, such as a
WHAT IS country or region, exceeds the carrying capacity of
OVERPOPUL ATION? that area's environment to support the people
living there at a decent standard of living.
ARTICLE
A minister in the northeast Indian state of Nagaland last year called on Indians to contribute to a sustainable future by
refusing to have children and joining his self-declared “singles movement.” “Let us be sensible towards the issues of
population growth,” Temjen Imna Along tweeted, “or #StaySingle like me.” Meanwhile, growing numbers of Indian
millennials are deciding against having children for environmental reasons.
Neither development quite amounts to a mass movement. In Indian society, staying childless by choice is still unfathomable
for most people. But they are data points of a growing realization among Indians about the problem posed by their country’s
population, which is now the largest in the world.
The United Nations has stated that by the end of this month, India’s population will hit almost 1.43 billion and exceed that of
its economic and strategic rival China, long the world’s most populous nation. India, however, will have a tougher time than
China providing for the bulge, since it is three times smaller in landmass and almost six times behind in GDP.
In 2019, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that a large population was obstructing India’s development. “We have to
think if we can do justice to the aspirations of our children,” he said. “There is a need to have greater discussion and
awareness on population explosion.”
The new status has sparked a debate in India about whether it should emulate China’s population control policy and create a
central law that allows the government to legally, and punitively, enforce a maximum number of children per couple. Some
members of the ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are pushing for a two-child policy (not quite China’s
former one-child rule) and say that a centralized effort is required to control population numbers.

very fast. very fast.
EFFECTS OF
OVERPOPUL ATION
• Unemployment: Generating employment for a huge
population in a country like India is very difficult. The
number of illiterate persons increases every year. The
unemployment rate is thus showing an increasing trend.
Adding to these vows was the COVID-19 pandemic
which pushed millions on to the brink of poverty and
unemployment.
• Manpower utilization: The number of jobless individuals
is on the rise in India due to economic depression, slow
business development and expansion activities.
• Pressure on infrastructure: Development of
infrastructural facilities is unfortunately not keeping
pace with the growth of population. The result is lack of
transportation, communication, housing, education,
healthcare etc. There has been an increase in the
number of slums, overcrowded houses, traffic
congestion etc.
EFFECTS OF
OVERPOPUL ATION
• Resource utilization: Land areas, water resources, forests are
over exploited. The growing population could pose a threat to
already existing ecosystem, as the number increases
consumption increases which puts stress on natural resources
which could lead to shortage of water and food.
• Decreased production and increased costs: Food production
and distribution have not been able to catch up with the
increasing population and hence the costs of production have
increased. Inflation is the major consequence of over
population.
• Inequitable income distribution: In the face of an increasing
population, there is an unequal distribution of income and
inequalities within the country widen. Due to excessive
number of individuals, the job is not valued appropriately
which could significantly bring down the value of the skill.
• Promoting family planning: Spreading awareness
about the contraception measures and birth control
techniques is most effective method to keep the
population within limit. We need to make people
aware about benefits and ways of family planning in
order to overcome the problem of overpopulation. It
will also help them to understand the need of having
one or two children at the most.
• Balanced ratio: It is also necessary to make
qualitative improvement in the population. The gap
between the children should be at least five years
SOLUTION TO and the number of offspring should not exceed two
children per family.
THE PROBLEM • Increase in marriage age: Minimum age of marriage
of boys and girls should be increased. The age of
marriage in India has been fixed for girls at 18 years
and for boys at 21 years. It should be complied with
firmly in all the states. For this, we require a strong
political will, accompanied by an effective system of
governance.
• Improvement in public health services: It is
necessary to pay attention to public health and
cleanliness to increase man’s economic capacity. In
each state, emphasis should be on pollution-free and
clean environment in urban and rural areas.
