Resistance & Tolerance

The document provides an overview of identifying and calculating the value of resistors, including their types and color coding. It explains the concept of tolerance in resistors, detailing how to compute the tolerance based on color-coded values. Common tolerances, such as those for gold and silver bands, are also discussed, along with examples of calculating maximum and minimum resistance values.

TOPIC:
Identify the
TOPIC
tolerance of
a resistor.
TOLERANCE
Objectives:
1. Define tolerance.
2. Compute for the tolerance
of a given resistor.
Resistor color coded value is
not absolute.
The real resistance of the
resistor is sometimes lower
or higher than its color
coded value but not to
exceed its tolerance level.
Tolerance is the limit on
how far the real value of
the resistor can deviate
from its color coded value.
It can be more or less but
subjected to a tolerable
limit.
Common Tolerance are:
Gold +/- 5%
Silver +/- 10%
Convert to decimal
5% = 5 ÷ 100 = 0.05
10% = 10 ÷ 100 = 0.10
Gold +/- 5%
Silver +/- 10%

- = Minimum Value

4 5 10 +/- 5%
450 Ω +/- 5%
450 Ω +/- 5%
Solving for Tolerance
Tolerance = +/- 5%
450 Ω +/- 5%
Tolerance = +/- 5%
Convert to decimal =
0.05
450 Ω +/- 5%
Tolerance =
450 Ω x 0.05 =
22.5 Ω
450 Ω +/- 5%
Maximum Value =
450 Ω + 22.5 =
472.5 Ω
450 Ω +/- 5%
Minimum Value =
450 Ω - 22.5 =
427.5 Ω
