Skills Framework for the Information Age
(SFIA)
- “SFIA describes the skills and competencies
required by professionals in roles involved in
information and communication technologies,
digital transformation and software engineering.”
https://www.sfia-online.org/en/tools-and-
resources/using-sfia/sfia-guiding-principles
- It is important because it gives us a common
language to discuss jobs and roles

Common ICT Job Profiles
- You did watch the SFIA video, didn’t
you?
- In 2013, the Australian Computer
Society conducted a survey of members
(5000 responses)
- In the survey, respondents were asked
to nominate the top four SFIA skills they
used in their role
- The results of the survey and the SFIA
skills associated with 25 common ICT
job roles were published in:

Common ICT Job Profiles
- One of the exercises we will do in
the tutorial will be for you to go
through the Common ICT job
profiles and select a role that you
think might be something you
would like to do

…an example profile
- The ’primary SFIA skill’
for the Database
Adminstrator role is
“Database
Administration”
(DBAD).
- Go to https://www.sfia-

can look up the details
of that skill

New skills
- The Common ICT Job Profiles was created in 2013.
- There have been changes in ICT since then (really???)
- Some are reflected in the most recent version of SFIA (7), for example:
- Asset Management (ASMG)
- Data Visualisation (VISL)
- Demand Management (DEMM)
- Knowledge Management (KNOW)
- Measurement (MEAS)
- Organisational Capability Development (OCDV)
- Real time/embedded systems development(RESD)
- Software design (SWDN)
- Supplier management (SUPP)
- User research (URCH)

Recruiters
- Another good place to learn more about jobs and
employment in the ICT industry is recruitment
web sites
- Possibly the most well known is seek.com.au
- We will also look here in the tutorial to see what jobs
you might like to aim for
