2 Wearable Sports Technology and the Future
What is your essential kit when you go to sports training? A water bottle, trainers, maybe an
energy bar? How about a smartwatch and a fitness tracker? From heart rate to skin temperature to
perspiration, this technology measures and reports what your body is doing. It can then go on to tell
you how well you slept and even how to better your training routine. Wearable sports technology
is destined to become much more complex, providing a wide set of data for athletes, coaches and
fitness trainers in both the amateur and the professional world. The market for these devices is huge,
as you will realise if you look around at the start of a marathon or group fitness class.
However, the wrist as the location of choice for these devices will soon be a thing of the past.
One of the drawbacks of the current sports wearable is that the wrist is not the ideal place to
measure the performance of the whole body. The answer to this problem might be in moving
wearables from watches to clothing. If devices can be part of tracksuits or hidden inside soles of
trainers, they can be placed exactly where they are most effective. Developments include
a sports bra that, being close to the heart and lungs, detects breathing rhythm and therefore
optimum fat-burning levels. Another device, integrated into shorts, measures hip movement and can
help you develop your running style so that you’re more efficient and less likely to get injured. UV
protected glasses have earphones containing a voice-activated coaching system that devises unique
training programmes by tracking performance.
Further innovations are aimed at team sports. The USA’s baseball regulator recently approved a
compression sleeve that tracks the workload of the pitcher’s arm. Heart monitoring straps are also
being implemented. However, as more technology is strapped on to professional athletes, some are
expressing concern over how such devices could be used to track their diet, sleep patterns and life off
the field. Some players have said they feel like guinea pigs, being used to test the new tech while
endangering their own privacy and security, with the possibility of the data being used against them, for
example, to predict when their performance is likely to decline and as a result bring about lower
salaries. Clearly, this tech itself needs monitoring as it develops, so that sportspeople don’t become
mere collections of statistics for others’ profit.
