The TMA covers Chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4 each question is
worth 15 points for a total of 60 points. Solve each question
in the provided space. You have to show your work.

Question 1:( 3 marks each)

a. Solve the equations:

i) 2 =0
x +1

: Factorizing the numerator = (x+7)2

( x+7 )2
: =0
x +1

: ( x +7 )2=0

: x = -7

Check x2 + 1 is non zero for x = -7

(-7)2 + 1 = 50

: 50 ≠ 0

Solution : x = -7

ii) 3 x −x+ 2=0 ( use the quadratic formula)

iii) x −12 x+5 =7 (Apply the square root property)

2

: x 2−12 x+5 – 7 = 0

: x 2−12 x−2=0 x2 = c , x = ± √ c

(x – 6 )2 – 2 – 36 = 0

: (x – 6)2 – 38 = 0

: x – 6 = ± √38

: x = 6 ± √ 38

Solution : x = 6 + √ 38 , x = 6 −√ 38

b. Solve the following inequalities

2 x +3
ii) 3 | 5 | -8 ≤ 2

2 x +3
: 3 | 5 | ≤ 10 , |a| ≤ b , a ≤ b∧−a ≤b

Question 2 : ( 4+7+4marks)

a. Given f(x)= x 3−2 x 2-4x +5, show that f(x) has a zero on the interval [-
1, 2].

Evaluate: f(-1) = (-1)3 – 2(-1)2 – 4(-1) + 5 : f(2) = (2)3 – 2(2)2 – 4(2) + 5

=-1–2+4+5 =8–8–8+5

=6 =-3

Since: f(-1) = 6 > 0 and f(2) = -3 <0 , function changes sign between x = -1
and x = 2 then by intermediate value theorem the function has at least one
zero on the interval [ -1 , 2 ]

b. Write the equation of the line with the following conditions:

i) Through A(10, -6), parallel to the x-axis.

Since the line is parallel to the x-axis the equation will be y = - 6 because
any point passing on the line the y-coordinates remains constant which is
y=-6

ii) Through the points (1, 7), and (-3, 2)

2 1

point-slope form of equation : y – y1 = m( x – x1 ) (1,7)

MT101/ TMA 5 of 8 Spring/ 2023-2024
5
: y – 7 = 4 (x−1)
5 5
Simplify : y – 7 = 4 x− 4
5 5
: y = 4 x− 4 +7
5 5 28
: y = 4 x− 4 + 4
5 23
: y = 4 x+ 4
c. Find the center and the radius of the circle with the equation
2 2
x + y −10 x+ 2 y +22=0
: standard form of equation of the circle with center (h , k)
: Radius (x – h ) 2 + (y – k )2 = r2
Completing the square for the x-terms : x2 – 10x + 25 – 25
: (x 2 – 10x + 25) – 25
: (x – 5)2 – 25

Completing the square for the y-terms : y2 + 2y + 1 – 1

: ( y 2 + 2y + 1) – 1

: (y+1) 2 – 1

Simplify : (x – 5)2 + (y+1)2 – 25 – 1 + 22 = 0

: (x – 5)2 + (y+1)2 – 4 = 0

Center of the circle is ( 5 , - 1 ) R= √ 4 = 2

Question 3: (3+3+4+5 marks)

a. Given f(x) = x 3∧g ( x )=x +1 Find (f o g) (3)?

: g(3) : g(3) = 3 + 1 = 4 : f(x)= x3
: f(3) =43 = 64

: (f o g) (3) = 64
b. Determine whether the function f(x) = 5−3 x 2is one to one function.
derivative of f(x):

f(x) = ⅆx (5-3x2) = 0 -6x=-6x
: f(x)= - 6x = 0 , x = 0
: for x < 0 , f(x) < 0
MT101/ TMA 6 of 8 Spring/ 2023-2024
: for x > 0 , f(x) > 0

The function f(x) = 5 – 3x2 has a maximum at that point , which means its
not one to one function

c. Write an equation for the inverse of the one to one function f(x ) =2 x+ 9.
: y = 2x + 9 swap : x = 2y + 9

: x – 9 = 2y
x−9
:y= 2
x−9
The equation for the inverse of function = f(x) = 2x + 9 is f -1(x)= 2
d. Write the domain in interval notation for: ln ¿).
: x2 + 10x +16 > 0
: x2 + 10x +16 = (x+8)(x+2)
:x+8>0 :x+2>0
:x>-8 :x>-2

So, the domain of the function f(x) = ln(x2+10x+16) in interval notation is (-2,∞)

Question 4 : ( 6 +4 +5 marks )

a. Solve the equation:

i) ln x - ln x 2 +ln3=0
: ln (x) - ln(x ¿¿ 2)¿ +ln(3) = 0
: In ( xx )+ ¿ ( 3)=0
