CH. 6: THE LIVING ORGANISMS - CHARACTERISTICS AND HABITAT

1. Which of the two occurs over a short period of time: acclimatization or adaptation?
Define these terms.

Acclimatization.

The small changes that take place in the body of an organism over short periods ,to
overcome small problems arise due to changes in the surroundings are called
acclimatization.

The presence of specific features which enable a plant or an animal to live in a particular
habitat is called adaptation .

2. List the most common adaptive feature found in the animals in cold regions.

Animals living in the cold region have thick skin or fur to protect them from cold.

3. Name any two aquatic animals with gills and animals with blow holes.

Gills : Squids, Octopus

Blow holes : Dolphins And Whales

4. What is the unique feature of long claws in the front legs of a lion?

The claws of lion are meant to grip and hold the prey, piercing through skin and muscle
for a tight hold.

5. Differentiate between aquatic and terrestrial habitat with three examples each.

The habitats of the plants and animals that live on land are called terrestrial habitats.

Eg: grassland ,mountain region ,deserts

The habitats of plants and animals that live in water are called aquatic habitats.
Eg: ocean, river, pond

6. What is stimuli? Give two examples of it.

The changes in our surroundings that makes us respond to them are called stimuli.

Eg: Wild animals ran away when white light is flashed towards them
We shut our eyes when entered suddenly a bright place from a dark place.

7. Define the terms:

a. Respiration: is the process of breakdown of food with the release of energy.

b. Reproduction: is the process by which new individual organisms are produced
from their parents
c. Excretion: is the the process of getting rid of wastes by the living organisms .
d. Transpiration: is the process of loss of water through the leaves.

8. How do the following features help these organisms to survive in its habitat?

a. Strong hooves of mountain goat: help to running up the rocky slopes of the
mountains
b. Needle like leaves of mountain trees: help the rain water and snow to slide off
easily.
c. The eyes in front of the lion: allow the animal to have a correct idea about the
location of its prey.
d. Streamlined shape of fish: help them move easily in water.
e. Strong back legs of frogs: help them in leaping and catching their prey.
f. Highly divided leaves in submerged plants: help the water to flow easily through
it without damaging them.
g. Long legs of camel: help to keep their bodies away from the heat of the sand.
h. Flat fins and tail of fish: help them to change directions and keep their body
balance in water.

9. What do you mean by biotic and abiotic components of a habitat? Give three examples
each.

The living things in a habitat are called as biotic components.

Eg: plants, animals and micro organisms

The nonliving things in a habitat are called as abiotic components.

Eg: soil, air, water

10.Assertion( A) - Reason (R) based question.

a. Assertion (A)-Most of the fish possess streamlined shape.

Reason ( R) – Streamlined shape helps fish to use oxygen in water.

A). Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

B). Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.

C). A is true but R is false.

D) A is false but R is true.
b. Assertion ( A)- The stem of cactus is covered with a thick waxy layer.
Reason ( R) – Waxy layer helps to decrease the rate of transpiration.

A). Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

B). Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.

C). A is true but R is false.

D) A is false but R is true.
