Form 1 Mathematics Assignment with

Answers
Topics: Directed Numbers, HCF, LCM, Decimals, Fractions, Approximat

Total Marks: 100

Instructions:

• Attempt all questions.

• Show all workings clearly.

• Use proper mathematical notation where necessary.

Section A: Directed Numbers (20 Marks)

1. Evaluate the following: (2 marks each)

(a) −9 + 15 = 6
(b) −20 − (−8) = −12
(c) (−4) × (−3) = 12
(d) (−36) ÷ 6 = −6
(e) 7 − (−5) + (−3) = 7 + 5 − 3 = 9

2. Arrange the following numbers in ascending order: (2 marks)

−12, −8, −3, 0, 5, 10

3. The temperature at midnight is −5◦ C. By 6 AM, it drops by 8◦ C. New tempera-

ture: −5 − 8 = −13◦ C (2 marks)

4. A diver is 15 meters below sea level. If he descends another 8 meters and then
ascends 5 meters, final position: −15 − 8 + 5 = −18 meters (2 marks)

5. If x = −3 and y = 5, find the value of: (2 marks each)

(a) x + y = −3 + 5 = 2
(b) x − y = −3 − 5 = −8
(c) xy = (−3)(5) = −15
(d) x2 − y 2 = 9 − 25 = −16

Section B: Highest Common Factor (HCF) and Low-
est Common Multiple (LCM) (15 Marks)
1. Find the HCF of the following numbers: (3 marks each)

(a) 18 and 24: HCF = 6

(b) 48, 72, and 96: HCF = 24

2. Find the LCM of: (3 marks each)

(a) 6 and 9: LCM = 18

(b) 15, 20, and 30: LCM = 60

3. The LCM of two numbers is 84, and their HCF is 6. If one number is 42, find the
other number.
Using the formula: HCF × LCM = a × b, we get:

6 × 84 = 42 × b

Solving for b, we get b = 12 (3 marks)

Section C: Decimals and Fractions (20 Marks)

1. Convert the following fractions to decimals: (2 marks each)
7
(a) 8
= 0.875
3
(b) 5
= 0.6
(c) 1 14 = 1.25

2. Convert the following decimals to fractions in their simplest form: (2 marks each)
9
(a) 0.45 = 20
11
(b) 2.75 = 4

Section D: Approximation and Estimation (15 Marks)

1. Round off the following numbers to the nearest whole number: (2 marks each)

(a) 6.78 ≈ 7
(b) 14.52 ≈ 15

2. Round off the following to 2 decimal places: (2 marks each)

(a) 5.6789 ≈ 5.68

(b) 3.1416 ≈ 3.14

2
Section E: Problem Solving (30 Marks)
1. A school cafeteria prepares 120 loaves of bread every day. How many loaves are
prepared in: (3 marks each)

(a) One week? 120 × 7 = 840

(b) One month (30 days)? 120 × 30 = 3600

2. A farmer harvested 168 bags of maize and distributes them equally among 14
schools. Each school receives: 168 ÷ 14 = 12 bags (3 marks)

3. The cost of 1.8 kg of meat is $9.90. The cost of 3.25 kg is:

9.90
× 3.25 = 17.88
1.8
(3 marks)

4. A rectangular swimming pool measures 25.6 m by 12.4 m. Area:

25.6 × 12.4 = 317.44 ≈ 317.4 (1 dp)

(3 marks)

5. A cyclist covers 315 km in 7 hours. Average speed:

315 ÷ 7 = 45 km/h

(3 marks)

6. A student answers 19 out of 25 questions correctly. Express as: (3 marks each)

19
(a) Fraction: 25
19
(b) Percentage: 25
× 100 = 76%
