Thin Lens

Question-1.1:
A thin lens with a focal length of 20 cm is used to image an
object located 30 cm away from the lens. Determine the image
distance, its nature (real/virtual, inverted/upright), and the
magnification.

Question-1.2:
Two thin lenses with focal lengths 𝑓1 = 15 cm and 𝑓2 = −10 cm
are placed 5 cm apart. Calculate the equivalent focal length of the
system.
Thick Lens
Question-2.1:
For a thick lens with radii of curvature 𝑅1 = 30cm, 𝑅2 = −25cm,
thickness 𝑑 = 5cm and refractive index n = 1.6, calculate the focal
length and the positions of the principal planes.

Question-2.2:
An object is placed 40 cm in front of a thick lens. Using the
given lens parameters (from Question 2.1), determine the position,
size, and nature of the image.

Question-2.3:
Under what conditions can a thick lens be approximated as a
thin lens?
Analytical Ray Tracing

Question-3.1:
Write the equation for the refraction of a ray at a spherical

plano-convex lens surface (𝑅 = 15 cm, 𝑛 = 1.5, u = 30 cm).

Question-3.2:
A ray enters a plano-concave lens with 𝑅 = 25 cm, thickness 𝑑
= 2 cm, and 𝑛 = 1.5. Calculate the image position for an object placed
30 cm in front of the lens.

Matrix Method

Question-4.1:

Consider a sphere of radius 20

cm of refractive index 1.6 (see
Fig.). Obtain the system matrix
and find the positions of the
paraxial focal point .
Question-4.2:
Consider a thick equiconvex
lens (made of a material of
refractive index 1.5) of the type
shown in Fig. The magnitudes of
the radii of curvature of the two
surfaces are 4 cm. The thickness of
the lens is 1 cm, and the lens is
placed in air. Obtain the system matrix, and determine the focal length
and the positions of unit planes.

Question-4.3:
Consider a system of two thin lenses as shown in Fig. For a 1
cm tall object at a distance of 40 cm from the convex lens, calculate
the position and size of the image.
Mirrors and Optical Cavities
Question-5.1:
write the relationship between the radius of curvature and the

mirror with 𝑅 = 40cm.
