Section 2: Variable acceleration
Exercise
In these questions, the following symbols and units are used unless otherwise stated.
s is displacement (or distance) in metres.
u is the initial velocity (or speed) in metres per second.
v is the final velocity (or speed) in metres per second.
a is the acceleration in metres per second per second.
1. The displacement of a body moving in a straight line at time t seconds is given by
the formula: s = 2t 3 − t 2
(i) find v when t = 0
(ii) find v when t = 3
(iii) find a when t = 3
2. The velocity of a body moving in a straight line at time t seconds is given by the
1
formula v = 3+ 2 t 2 and the body starts from the origin.
(i) find the initial velocity of the body
(ii) find the initial acceleration of the body
(iii) find the displacement after 3 seconds
3. The acceleration of a body moving in a straight line at t seconds is given by the
formula a = 1 – 2t . At time t = 0, s = 0 and u = 12.
(i) find the velocity of the body at t = 2
(ii) find the time at which the velocity is zero
(iii) find the displacement when the velocity is zero
4. While travelling along a motorway a car is forced to stop. At the moment the
driver applies the brakes the speed is 30 m s-1. During deceleration, t seconds after
the brakes have been applied, the acceleration is given by the formula
a = 0.18t 2 -1.8t. The distance travelled after the brakes have been applied is
given by s.
(i) How long does it take for the car to stop?
(ii) How far does the car travel in the time it takes to stop?
