In 1982, several people dies after consuming cyanide-laced Tylenol capsules. Johnson &Johnson's swift
and ethical response is often studied as a model of crisis management. The situation highlighted the
ethical of dilemma of consumer safety vs business interests.

Considering that the situation occured in Zimbabwe, using the knowledge acquired from this module
1. Identify and explain the ethical dilemmas present in such a situation

In this situation there are several ethical dilemmas present .This includes

Honesty -Johnson & Johnson’s swift company was dishonest when it comes to
their products. It might be a situation whereby the company takes short cuts
when producing their capsules and this endangers the life of the consumers

The company should prioritize the consumers at all costs . The safety and well
being of the consumers should be prioritized. In this case if the capsules might
have been tampered with and it is the duty of an organization to test and try
products before giving them to the public.

The company lacks intergrity as the capsules, cyanide laced Tylenol were labeled
instead the consumers die

2. What measures do you suggest the company to take

In a situation like this one it it is crucial to stop the buying and selling of these
company products with immediate effect to avoid more deaths.

The company should take a closer look into the situation by investigating
thoroughly and take the necessary action to avoid such incidents.

The company should prioritize the safety and well being of its consumers. It
should follow the International Standard for the medical companies which is the
ISO 13485 : 2016 this improves the quality of the goods produced.
The company should take accountability of the situation in order to gain the trust
of the consumers again .

3. Design an ethical framework to be adopted by the company to avoid ethical


challenges in the future

To avoid ethical challenges in the future the company should strictly set the
values and norms of the company for instance honesty as it is crucial in an
organization which deals with the health of the people

In any situation the company should take accountability which is an important


thing when dealing with the health of people

The company should set its principles such as being transparent as the
consumers can be informed about the drugs they are purchasing this can include
the side effects and the expire date

This can help the company to avoid such situations in the near future.
