1 Introduction

1.1 User Manual Scope

This User Manual contains description of the design and provides instructions for
deployment, operation and maintenance of Chorus 9 Downhole Acoustic Logging Tool.

1.2 Requirements to personnel

The operating personnel must meet the following qualifications:


- Oilfield experience;
- Logging tool operation experience;
- Knowledge of electrical and occupational safety at oil wells;
- Bench tool skills;
- PC and Windows OS skills at an advanced user’s level.

The list of used acronyms is given in Table 1.

2 Description and operation

2.1 Designation

Chorus 9 downhole spectral acoustic logging tool engineering documentation code is


SNL078.00.000.

2.2 Function

Chorus 9 (‘Tool’, further on in the text) is designed to measure acoustic emissions


generated by fluid and/or gas flows during logging operations conducted in oil and gas
wells.

2.3 Area of application

Logging surveys in oil and gas wells.

2.4 Operating conditions

The tool will remain functional under the following operating conditions:
- Ambient temperature: -20...+150 (C (-4…+302 (F);

- In formation fluids, mineral and semi-synthetic oils at H 2S concentrations up to 30%


(provided that TFE/P (Aflas) Black Duro 90 O-Rings are installed);

- Under ambient pressures up to 60 MPa (8,702, psi).

The tool can be supplied in two modifications:

- SNL078.00.000 (‘INDIGO version’, further on in the text);


- SNL078.00.000-01 (‘Memory version’, further on in the text).

2.6 Design and operation

The tool (see Fig. 1) consists of the following main components:


1 – Hydrophone; 2 – Electronics module; 3 – Holder; 4 – Fill plug.

The product consists of downhole tool, patch cable, and PC software.

The tool records downhole acoustic signals and then matches the recorded data to
the time at which the logging survey was run. The software is programmable and
supports acquisition, processing and storage of the data acquired by the tool, and the
processed data output in graphic or digital form to display and/or printer.

The tool operates under a cyclogram assigned by the user. In the cyclogram, the user
can assign a data-recording mode which is determined by the number of samples
recorded per second. The modes are conventionally designated as “1х”, “2х”, “4х”,
“Sand Detection” and “Full-time".

The analogue signal from piezoelectric cells is transmitted to two pre-amplifier inputs
and then to HF and LF channel filters. After that the signals are digitised by

appropriate ADC (HF, LF) and the resulting data are saved in memory. The data are
stored in a file in binary code.

2.7 Accessories and consumables

- Multimeter;

- Flat-blade screwdriver (3 mm blade);

- Pipe wrench (42 mm span);

- Torque screwdriver Garant No. 659906 500 with 659920 3 (Heagon 3) bit;

- Desktop PC or a laptop with OS Windows 8 or Windows 10 installed;

- Other accessories and consumables are included in the tool spare parts kit.

2.8 Markings

According to the ED, the following markings should be made on the tool (See Fig. 2):

- Product code and manufacturer’s logotype on the protective housing;

- Product index and serial number on the holder.

2.9 Package and contents

Packaging requirements:

- The product is packed as per GOST 12997–84-1700 into a case of PELI PELI 1700
type according to Packing Drawing SNL078.00.000-Т10 UC;

- Outer threaded connection should be protected with a safety cap;

- Spare O-rings, lock washers, and safety rings are to be packed into Zip-Lock bags
separately for each type and size;

- Service documents are to be packed into a Zip-Lock bag.

A packing sheet containing the following info is attached to the tool:

- Packing list number;

- Product index and serial number;

- Inspector's and packer's signatures;

- Packing date.

To avoid any possible damage, the tools should be transported in a shipping box only.

The tool package items are listed in Table 3 and spare parts kit in Table 4.

2.10 Description and operation of the tool main components

2.10.1 The hydrophone consists of two piezoelectric cells connected to the


electronics module via electrical feed-throughs. The hydrophone internal cavities are
filled with silicon fluid (Fig. 3).

2.10.2 Electronics module consists of electronics module board and SNL AMI HT
modem board which are fastened, respectively, to frame and battery pack chassis.

Both devices are electrically interconnected with wires and ensure tool operation in
INDIGO mode (Fig. 4) or memory mode (Fig. 4a).
The electronics module is divided in three functional parts:
- Analogue part which consists of amplifier, filter and ADC;
- Digital part which includes MC and memory chip;
- Power supply unit.
The analogue part amplifies the signal, dividing it into HF and LF bands, and digitises
the signal.
The digital part controls the tool, reads out and stores data in memory.
The power supply unit generates principal voltages: :+5.5 В, -5.5 В, +5 В, -5 В, +3.3
В, +1.8 V.
The AMI modem HT board contains digital circuits which maintain communication
with the tool in INDIGO or EWL mode via single-wire communication line under AMI
protocol.
2.10.3 Memory version of the tool has a battery compartment where 2ER26500S
capsule can be accommodated (Fig. 4а).The battery should have negative
(black/blue) and positive (red) tin-plated wire leads. These contacts should be sealed
with heat-shrink tube of red (positive lead) and blue/black (negative lead) colour.

3 Preparing the tool for operation


3.1 Operating restrictions

3.1.1 The tool should be used in wells and operating environment with known limiting
parameters which do not exceed the relevant ratings of the tool (See Table 2).

3.1.2 No torque is allowed to be transferred from the tool via the hydrophone when the
tool is assembled/disassembled (Fig. 3).

3.1.3 No shocks or other force impacts on the hydrophone are allowed (Fig. 3).

3.1.4 Chorus 9 with standard O-rings is not allowed to be run in H 2S wells.

3.2 Safety measures

During the operations, follow the regulatory requirements effective in the Company.

3.3 Visual inspection

3.3.1 After unpacking, the tool needs to be visually inspected for damages.

3.3.2 The surfaces should be free of dents.

3.3.3 Remove plastic protective caps from the tool. Make sure that O-rings and safety
rings are installed in field positions and visually inspect their condition.

3.3.4 Rubber rings should have no shears, burrs, cuts, or swells. If necessary, replace
O-rings with new ones.

3.3.5 There should be no penetration holes, fractures, or oil stains on tool parts.
Retainer rings should be staked.

IMPORTANT: In case any defects have been found, the


manufacturer will decide if further operation is feasible.
Deformation of body parts and threaded connections precludes
any further use of the tool.

3.4 Tool activation

3.4.1 MAXIM software installation

The MAXIM software is used for programming the tool and downloading data from it.
Chorus 9 has one programming interface which operates under USB 2.0 protocol.

Install MAXIM programme as described in MAXIM User Manual. Use TGT Updater to
download the latest version of the programme.

3.4.2 Driver installation

If your PC has access to Internet, the driver will be installed automatically when the
tool is connected for the first time. If automatic driver installation fails, install the driver
manually from MAXIM working folder. To do so, open Device Manager and select TGT
WinUSB SNL Device, then right click on the icon and select Update Driver. In the
appeared window select Manual Search and Installation, and specify the driver search
path: C:\ Program Files\ TGT\ MAXIM\ Plugins\ INDIGO Suite\ Tools\ SNL. Click
Continue and wait until the driver is updated.

3.5 Initial startup of the tool

3.5.1 Prior to commencing logging operations at well site, inspect the tool visually as
per P. 3.3.

3.5.2 Test the tool in SNLMT-2 Mobile Tester as per User Manual LE006.12.000RE.

3.5.3 Check battery capsule status. The capsule should be new and undamaged.

IMPORTANT: While working with a lithium battery, avoid wire


short-circuiting in order to prevent battery combustion or
explosion.

3.5.4 Trim capsule wires as follows: Cut wires 60...70 mm from tool body, remove 5…8
mm of insulation from wire ends, and, if necessary, tinplate the ends with HMP
soldering alloy.

3.5.5 Make sure that patch cable SNL078.10.000 is available and check its condition.

3.6 Tool startup prior to operation

3.6.1 Put the tool in SNMLT-2 mobile tester case and test the tool HF cannel for
background noises. Use 4x recording mode, with the recording session duration of
300 sec. Check noise level in the resulting data using SNLTime software: go to Tools
menu and select Tool background check. After the test, Deviation field should turn
green.

3.6.2 Connecting the memory type tool

3.6.2.1 Install battery capsule into electronics module chassis (Fig. 5).

3.6.2.2 Put cover in place and fasten with three standard-issue screws.

3.6.2.3 Connect wires to power terminal. Push back internal spring inside terminal and
insert battery capsule leads into terminal using 3.5 mm screwdriver or similar tool (Fig.
6).

IMPORTANT: Observe polarity marks on the battery capsule and


power terminal. First connect positive (red) wire and then negative
(black/blue) wire.

IMPORTANT: Do not use excessive force when pushing back


connector internal spring, to prevent its breaking.

3.6.2.4 Check voltage on power terminal with voltage meter. The voltage should be
within the range of 6.5 V – 7.2 V.
3.6.2.5 Connect tool to PC via patch cable SNL078.10.000 (Fig. 7).

IMPORTANT: Follow the marks on the frame and cable connector


to make sure that the cable is connected correctly (See Fig. 7).

3.6.2.6 Tool connection will be confirmed by a sound signal from the PC and TGT
WinUSB SNL Device will be displayed.

3.6.2.7 Tool operability check, cyclogram preparation and tool startup for cyclogram
execution is performed using MAXIM programme.

3.6.3 Start MAXIM. Select INDIGO Suite and open Memory Mode tab. If the tool has
not been found automatically, check if it is selected as identifiable in Auto Scan list
and, if not, put the relevant switch in ON position. Then click Scan button and the
working cyclogram earlier uploaded into the tool will be downloaded and visualised,
and a message that the tool has been found correctly will be displayed in the log
window. If a tool detection and availability error message appears, unplug and
reconnect power source and patch cable.

3.6.3.1 Before starting operations, it is recommended to test the tool memory. To do


so, click TEST button. Once the test has been completed, a log window containing the
test results will appear. The log window will display the number of bad memory sectors,
the information about tool calibration availability/unavailability, and the microcontroller
programme version.

3.6.4 Preparing and writing a cyclogram into the tool

If a pre-loaded cyclogram does not need to be changed, you can skip the programming
phase and start the tool.

The cyclogram may consist of several intervals.

To prepare and write a cyclogram, go through the following steps:

- Specify the required number of working intervals;

- Set each interval’s duration in days, hours, and minutes;

- Select tool operation mode: 1х, 2х, Sand detection, or Full-time (continuous
recording);

- Select tool status within each interval. The tool status determines if data are going to
be recorded into tool memory during the selected time interval.

To write a new cyclogram into the tool, click Program button in the bottom part of the
window and wait until the operation is over (progress bar 100%). If the writing
operation is successful, the log window should display this message: ‘SNL is ready’.

3.6.5 Tool startup for cyclogram execution

Click Start button to put the tool into operating mode under the cyclogram.

A successful start will be confirmed by the corresponding message and the tool status
will change to WORK. Chorus 9 is identified as SNL9a with appropriate serial number.
If the need arises to change the cyclogram when the tool is in operating mode, click
Stop button to stop the operation. If Stop command has been successfully executed,
the tool status will change from WORK to IDLE. After that you can change the
cyclogram and restart the tool.

Once the work is completed, disconnect all patch cables from the tool and screw on
protective housing. Now the preparatory stage is over and the tool is ready for
operation.

3.7 Working with the tool after logging operations

3.7.1 After completion of logging operations, dismantle tool from toolstring and clean
(flush) it from dirt. The tool can be cleaned up without disassembling the toolstring.
Visually inspect tool for any defects.

3.7.2 Downloading data from the tool

3.7.2.1 Back out the protective housing from the tool. Measure supply voltage on the
battery terminals using a multimeter. Write down the measurement result into the
report.

3.7.2.2 Connect the tool to PC using a patch cable SNL078.10.000 and launch MAXIM
programme.

If the cyclogram has been finished before the beginning of downloading process, the
tool status will change from WORK to IDLE. If the tool is still operating under a
cyclogram (the status is WORK), you will not be able to download the data. When
required, the tool can be stopped by clicking Stop button.

3.7.2.3 Click Download button to download data and select a directory in the dialog
box where the data are to be saved.

Data downloading and saving process might take some time (max 30 min) and then
the integral noise power graph will be visualised in MAXIM (Fig. 8). This graph is used
for visual data quality control: straight horizontal high-amplitude bars means that the
tool is in motion and vertical low-amplitude bars indicate that the measurements are
taken at stations. The data saved into the specified directory in binary format are
afterwards handed over for further processing.

3.7.2.4 Servicing the tool after logging operations


After the data have been downloaded, disconnect tool from PC and perform technical
maintenance as per Section 5.

3.8 Connecting the tool to other downhole tools

Two crossovers are included into the supply package in order to be able to connect
the tool to other tools with different threaded joints. Their general, with indication of
typical samples, are similar to Figures 9 and 10.
The crossover can be installed either on the front or the rear end of the tool.

5 Preventive Maintenance, storage,


transportation and disposal procedures
5.1 General guidelines

5.1.1 Preventive Maintenance operations are performed to keep the tool in constant
readiness for work.

5.1.2 While performing PM-2 and PM-3 follow the guidelines given in Preventive
Maintenance Manual SNL078.00.00.000IS.

5.1.3 The types of tool maintenance (PM) are listed in Table 6.

Note: “+” means that the operation marked with this sign is to be performed, “-” mean

IMPORTANT: Take extreme caution when disassembling the tool.


Excess pressure may still remain inside the tool. Unscrew parts and
assemblies slowly, bleeding off gas accumulated in tool cavities.
During disassembly it is prohibited to:
- Stand in the line of possible expulsion of the part being dismantled;
- Work without safety glasses.

5.3 Storage

The tool must be stored in a shipping box in which it has been delivered or in a
dry and ventilated storage room at temperatures from +1 °С to +40 °С and maximum
relative humidity of 80 % with no acid or alkali vapours and other corrosive mixtures
in the environment (L Group under GOST 15150-69).

While in service, the tool must be kept in the logging unit with other logging
equipment and be securely fixed for transportation, or stored on a special rack in the
storage room.

No additional procedures are required in case the tool is to be mothballed.

5.4 Transportation

The tool should be transported in conformance with the following conditions and
procedures:

Tool transportation conditions are as specified for Group 7 GOST 15150-69 -


Machinery, Tools and other Equipment. Modifications for different climatic regions.

Limiting transportation conditions:

- Ambient temperature: from -20 °С to + 50 °С;

- Relative humidity at 30 oC: max. 95 %;

- Vibration in the range of 4-72 Hz with maximum acceleration of 30 m/sec2;

- Repetition rate of 80-120 percussions per minute with maximum acceleration of 30


m/sec2.

The tool should be transported in the original manufacturer’s package only. The
packaged tool may be transported in any type of vehicle in compliance with the
shipping regulations in effect for the relevant means of conveyance, provided that
mechanical impact on the product will not exceed the requirements specified for this
particular type of tool.

5.5 Disposal

No particular disposal requirements are specified for the tool as it does not
present any hazard to life, health, or environment after expiration of its service life.
