Summative MYP1 Algebraic Expressions PDF

The document outlines a summative assessment for MYP 1 students at Acorns International School focused on exploring mathematical patterns through algebraic expressions and equations. Students are tasked with creating a unique pattern, analyzing it, and connecting it to real-life examples while working in pairs but submitting individual work. The assessment includes specific objectives and deliverables such as a pattern design, a description, a growth table, an algebraic expression, and real-life connections.

PATTERNS IN NATURE: ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS AND EQUATIONS
PROJECT

GRASPS Task Design

Goal:

You will explore mathematical patterns by creating your own pattern, analyzing it, and
expressing it using an algebraic expression. You will also investigate patterns found in nature
and connect them to algebra.

Role:

You are a designer and mathematician. Your task is to create a unique pattern and explain the
mathematical rules behind it.

Audience:

Your classmates and teacher will review and discuss your pattern. You may also share your
findings with other students and teachers.

Situation:

Patterns appear everywhere—in nature, architecture, fabrics, and even daily routines.
Understanding patterns helps us make predictions and solve real-world problems. Your job is
to create a pattern and use algebra to explain how it grows.

Product/Performance:

You will create a pattern project that includes:

1. A pattern you design yourself (you can draw, use real objects, or make a digital
pattern).
2. A description of your pattern in words (explain how it grows and what makes it a
pattern).
3. A table showing how the pattern changes in the first five steps (write the number of
objects or elements in each step).
4. An algebraic expression that describes the pattern’s growth.
5. A connection to real-life patterns (explain where similar patterns exist in nature or
daily life).
