LIS 3301: CLASSIFICATION PROCEDURES2
FIRST SEMESTER 2022/2023
In this course students will increase proficiency in using classification schemes. Students are expected
to undertake more practical activities using classification tools improve skills in the organisation of
information resources. The course will expose students how to major classification systems available
for use in libraries. At the end of the course students should be able to demonstrate the understanding
of various schemes for classifying all genres of resources. They should also be able to demonstrate
understanding in development and application of controlled vocabularies, and syndetic structures.
They should be able to identify appropriate methods of evaluating and selecting tools and resources
for classifying information resources.Students will develop capacity to comprehend the connections
between traditional classification tools and emerging web complaint tool. The students will also learn
to evaluate and address practical challenges in classification of information resources. This course
emphasises on using new and emerging values standards. Students will gain the capacity necessary to
create a portfolio of transferable workplace skills.
WEEK ONE
1. Introduction and definition of concepts in classification (subject analysis, authority control,
value standards, etc)
2. Introduction to classification tools (Sear’s List of Subject headings, Library of Congress
Subject headings, etc)
3. Subject cataloguing and classification
WEEK TWO: Practical Use of Classificaton Schemes
1. Practice: Sear”s List of Subject Heading
2. Practice: Library of Congress Subject Heading
3. Practice: Dewey Decimal Classification
WEEK THREE: Practical Use of Classificaton Schemes
1. Practice: Moy’s Classification
2. Practice: Dewey Online
3. Practice: LCSH online
WEEK FOUR
1. Introduction to filing rules
2. Cutter Codes
3. Shelf listing
WEEK FIVE: Practice: Filing; Applying Cutter numbers; Shellf listing and reading
