A concern for Life
Physical education today has the potential of
contributing to the enhancement of positive
lifestyle changes which ultimately lead better
quality of life. This means that through physical
education, the individual can acquire sufficient
knowledge and understanding, activity skills and
describe attitudes that will eventually contribute
to his well-being in the process, he can achieve
total fitness which will be able him to avoid
common illness, use leisure wisely, practice safety
from harm, and overcome life’s stresses.
Ultimately, physical education can contribute
towards a relatively long and happy life.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEFINE

The term refers to an important segment of


generation education which aim to contribute
to the total development of the learner
through participation in selected vigorous
activities. It provides opportunities to acquire
lifelong skills that are essential to his physical,
mental, social and emotional development.
Three Function of PHYSICAL EDUCATION:
Biologic Integrative and Social
Biological function refers to the enhancement of the
individual’s growth and development through body
movement. Integrative function refers to personality
integration achieved through participation in properly
selected physical education activities. The informal nature of
the activities is such that they provide relaxation and relief
from strains and tension; provide opportunities for
socialization, as well as the development of the mental
capacities of the individual. The social function consists of
transmitting values and standards that are consistent with the
needs and ideals of Society.
Objectives of Physical Education

The objectives of physical education are focused


on the four aspects of development namely.

A. Physical Development
B. Social Development
C. Emotional Development
D. Mental Development
PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT
Through carefully selected physical
education activities, an individual who
participates actively will develop and maintain
good health and a high level of physical fitness.
The acquisition of physical skills can motivate
an individual to participate further in physical
activities; hence, his growth and development
will be enhanced.
SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
Participation in physical education activities
provides opportunities for the development of desirable
social traits needed for adjustment to the social life in
general. Some worthwhile traits are.
• Friendly
• Cooperation
• Respect for the right of others
• Good sportsmanship
• Good leadership and fellowship
• Honesty in group competition
EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The informal nature of physical education
activities offers opportunities for self-expression
and emotional mastery. Examples of worthwhile
emotional traits are:
• Self-confidence
• Self-control
• Self-reliance
• Courage
• Determination
MENTAL DEVELOPMENT
Through participation in physical
education activities, the individual develops
his mental capacities as he learns the
mechanical principles underlying movement,
as he acquires knowledge and understanding
of rules and strategies of games and sports, and
he discovers ways of improving his movement
in gymnastic and dance.
WHAT IS A PHYSICAL EDUCATED PERSON?
An individual who has undergone physical
education in the educational ladder cannot deny
the valuable contribution of this area of learning
toward his total development. Exposure and
experiences and regular class instruction and in
intramural and extramural competitions are
expected to have tremendous effect on his lifestyle.
A physical educated person:
• Understands the potential of physical education activities in the
attainment of the healthy lifestyle and strives to achieve this goal;
• Exercises regularly to develop and maintain his weight and physical
fitness; + Acquires sufficient skills to enable him to participate actively
in some form of recreational games, sports, and dances;
• Eats a balance diet and practices good eating habits;
• Gets adequate sleep and avoids drugs and stimulants that will
negatively affect his total well-being;
• Enjoys participation in variety of vigorous activities and recreational
pursuits; and
• Appreciates good performances and games, sports and dances
What is physical fitness?
It is a physical condition when an individual has
the capacity to do everyday tasks without a feeling
of exhaustion. If ever he experiences fatigue, he can
easily recover and can indulge further in any chosen
activity after a rest period.
Major goal of fitness
To live the good life means that an individual satisfies
his basic needs as physical well-being, love, affection,
security, and self-respect. He lives happily with other
people because he likes them and is interested in them.
He has interest and desire to serve humanity and believes
in exemplifies high ethical standards. Because of his close
relationship with people and future events, he lives an
interesting and exciting life.
The Concept of Physical Fitness

Physical fitness is the primary specific objective in


teaching physical education. Therefore, it is in order that
the physical education teachers should have the correct
concept of physical fitness.
THE BODY
The body has four divisions. They are the following:

1. Head
2. Trunk
• Chest region
• Waist
• Abdominal region
• Hip Region
• Buttocks
• Back (upper and lower)
3. Upper extremities of arms
• Hands (fingers, palm)
• Wrist
• Arms (forearms, elbow)
• Shoulder girdle
4. Lower extremities
• Feet (toes, heels)
• Ankles
• Legs (thigh, harmstrings, lower legs knees)
