Disaster Management: A Disaster Is A Destructive Event That Occurs Suddenly and Involves Loss of Life and Property

The document discusses disaster management, categorizing disasters into natural and man-made types, with examples such as floods and earthquakes. It outlines the causes of floods and earthquakes, including climate change and groundwater extraction, respectively. Additionally, it presents mitigation strategies for both types of disasters, emphasizing infrastructure improvements and securing household items to reduce risks.

DISASTER MANAGEMENT

A disaster is a destructive event that occurs suddenly

and involves loss of life and Property.
TWO TYPES OF DISASTERS- Natural and Man-made
• NATURAL DISASTERS- A natural disaster is a major adverse event
resulting from natural processes of the Earth; examples
include firestorms, duststorms, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes,
volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, storms, and other
geologic processes.

• MAN MADE DISASTERS- Man-made disasters are extreme

hazardous events that are caused by human beings. Some examples
of man-made disaster emergencies include chemical spills,
hazardous material spills, explosions, chemical or biological
attacks, nuclear blast, train accidents, plane crashes, or
groundwater contamination.
FLOODS AND EARTHQUAKE
• FLOODS are the most frequent type of natural disaster and occur
when an overflow of water submerges land that is usually dry.
Floods are often caused by heavy rainfall, rapid snowmelt or a
storm surge from a tropical cyclone or tsunami in coastal areas.
EARTHQUAKE is a sudden tremor or movement of the earth's
crust, which usually originates at or below the surface. The outer
layer of the earth is solid and is divided into many sections known
as plates. These plates, float over the molten magma that flows
beneath the earth’s crust. Many of the earthquakes occur on
theedges of these plates along fault lines where the plates collide
or try to slide past each other.
CAUSES
• FLOODS - CAUSES
Massive Rainfall , Drainage systems and the ,effective infrastructure
design aid during heavy rains,Overflowing of the Rivers , Collapsed
Dams ,Snowmelt ,Deforestation, Climate change ,Emission of
Greenhouse Gases.
EARTHQUAKE – CAUSES
Groundwater extraction – decrease in pore pressure.Groundwater –
increase in pore pressure,Heavy rain,Pore fluid flow, High CO2
pressure Building dams, Earthquakes. No earthquakes (Seismic
quiescence)
MITIGATION STRATEGIES
• •Mitigation strategies for floods
• Retention basis, Construction and protection of flood ,Protection
embankments, ring bunds and other bunds,Dams and levees can also be
constructed, which can be used as temporary storing space which will
reduce the chances of lower plains getting flooded
• Mitigating measures of earthquake
• firmly securing large items of furniture (such as
• bookcases and large cabinets), TV and computer screens
• that may otherwise fall over in an earthquake. Likewise,
• avoiding storing items above beds or sofas reduces the
• chance of objects falling on individuals.
