A Detailed Lesson Plan in Gen. Mathematics 11 Monday

This document outlines a detailed lesson plan for a General Mathematics class focused on functions, specifically rational functions. The lesson aims to help students determine x- and y-intercepts and relate mathematical concepts to real-life situations, incorporating various teaching strategies and group activities. Assessment includes exercises on finding intercepts and an assignment to represent a rational function graphically.

A Detailed Lesson Plan in General Mathematics 11

Thursday (10/13/2022)

Most Essential Learning Competencies: solves problems involving

functions. M11GM-Ia-4
Performance Standards: The learner is able to accurately construct
mathematical models to represent real-life situations using functions.
Content Standards: The learner demonstrates understanding of key
concepts of functions.
I – LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
a. Determine the x – intercept, and y- intercept given he rational
functions
b. Relate problems to real life settings.
II – SUBJECT MATTER
A. Topic: Quarter 1: Day 2: Representations of Rational Functions
B. References: mathematics learner’s module for mathematics 11
C. Materials: chalk and chalkboard, PowerPoint presentation
D. Values integration: patience, perseverance, collaboration, and
hardworking
III- LEARNING STRATEGIES
Teacher’s Activity Learner’s Activity
a. Preparation
b. Daily Routine
c. Prayer
d. Energizer
e. Review
Recall:
(a) The domain of a function is the set of all values
that the variable x can take. The intercepts of the
graph of rational function are the points of
intersection of its graph and an axis; the y – axis and
the x – axis.
(b) The range of the function is the set of all values
that f(x) will take.
(c) The zeroes of a function are the values of x which
make the function zero. The real numbered zeroes are
also x-intercepts of the graph of the function.
(d) The y-intercept is the function value when x = 0.
to find y-intercept simply evaluate the function at x =
0.
The x – intercept of the graph of function r(x), if it
exists, occurs at the zeros of the numerator that are
not zeros of the denominators. To find x – intercept
equate the function to 0.
A. Motivation
Present a simple scenario involving rational functions
to the class:
B. Presentation Finding x – and y –
From the previous activity, let them guess the intercepts of a
possible topic of the day. rational equations
C. Discussion
 Illustrative Example:
1. Find the x – and y – intercepts of the following
rational functions:
❑ x−2
a. f( x ) =
x+ 2
2
x −3 x +2
b. f(x) = 2
x −4
2. Determine the zeros of the following rational
functions:
2
x−2 x + x−2
a. g(x) = b. g(x) =
x+6 2
x −4
 VERTICAL ASYMPTOTE
- THE VERTICAL LINE x=a is a vertical asymptote
of a function f if the graph increases or
decreases without bound as the x values
approach a from the right or left.

 Finding vertical asymptote

 To determine the vertical asymptote of a
rational function, first reduce the given function
to simplest form then find the zeroes of the
denominator that are not zeros of the
numerator.
Examples: determine the vertical asymptote of each
rational function.
x−1
a. f(x) = b. f(x) =
x+5
x +2
( x +1)(x−4)
2
2 x −x+1
c. g(x) = 2
x −6 x+ 9
D. Application
Group Activity:
(In a group of three.) each group will be given an
envelop which contain rational equation by finding the
x- and y – intercepts.
E. Generalization To find y-intercept
Let us sum up what we had discussing a while simply evaluate the
ago. function at x = 0.
1. How you are going to find the x and y – To find x – intercept
intercept of a functions? equate the function
to 0.

F. Assessment
Directions: Supplementary Exercises. Solve
the following rational equation by finding the
value x – and y - intercepts
H. Assignment
Directions:
Represent the rational function f(x) = x 2 − 3x − 10x
using a table of values. Plot the points given in the
table of values and sketch a graph by connecting the
points.
