Assignment Brief and Guidance:

Scenario:
Early aviation hydraulic systems were used as aircraft brakes systems. Today’s modern aircraft use
hydraulic systems for the operation of many flight-critical components. As the engineering of hydraulic
systems evolved and as the technology for these systems became more sophisticated, aircraft designers
began using hydraulic systems for many other aircraft functions.
Depending on the size of the aircraft and the application for which it is used, aviation hydraulics will
typically vary in complexity even though they share most of the same basic components. Depending on the

application that the hydraulic system fulfills, it is often necessary to install redundant systems that enable
safe operation of the aircraft in the event that a hydraulic system fails.
Group A
An Airbus A320 took-off from Melbourne Airport, Victoria bound for Hobart Airport, Tasmania. During
initial climb, after retracting the landing gear, the flight crew received an ECAM alert indicating low fluid
pressure in the green hydraulic system. The green hydraulic system is one of three independent operating
hydraulic systems on the Airbus A320 aircraft.
Upon receipt of the warning, the flight crew contacted air traffic control (ATC) on the departures frequency
to notify them of the alert and requested to maintain flight at 5,000 ft in order to further improvng the issue.
The flight crew then completed checks in the ECAM system and identified that they had lost fluid from the
green hydraulic system.
After a while, the flight crew established that due to the green hydraulic system failure, they would not
have normal brakes or nose wheel steering available on landing. Having identified the issue, the crew
advised ATC that they intended to return to Melbourne and ATC approved the request. Afterward pilot able
to land the aircraft without any further failure.
Group B
A Boeing 737-200 aircraft, registered PK-CJD, was being operated by PT Sriwijaya Air on a schedule
passenger SIRWIJAYA AIR flight from Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport (WIBB) Pekanbaru to Soekarno
Hatta Airport (WIII), Jakarta.
On 2000 feet after take-off from Pekanbaru, pilot observed that the hydraulic quantity System A
was decreasing. indicator pointed between UP and The flap 1 degree and it was observed also that
the Trailing Edge Flap Light indicator on AFT Overhead Panel shows green that mean the entire trailing
edge flap was still not up position. On 5000 feet, pilot observed that the hydraulic System A totally loss.
After 30 minutes later pilot manage to land the aircraft without any further damage.
You are recruited as an apprentice engineer in a large civil aircraft maintenance organization to investigate
any of the above issue according to your group (Group A or Group B). You have been tasked to inspect
cabin pressurization system, fuel system, ice protection and detection system and fire protection and
detection system on given aircraft as per the group. To work on this above issues, it is vital that you have a
sound knowledge on; cabin pressurization system, fuel system, ice protection and detection system and fire
protection and detection system, design requirements; design and operation cabin pressurization system,
fuel system, ice protection and detection system and fire protection and detection system, as well as
understanding about different fault and diagnosis of cabin pressurization system, fuel system, ice
protection and detection system and fire protection and detection system. On completion of the inspections
you are to compile a technical report that justifies how these systems and their components contribute to
safe flight. (Using appropriate report format and referencing).

Activity
Part: 1
write a technically accurate report that evaluates the function and operation in both normal and emergency
conditions the following aircraft systems:
 Cabin environmental Control system including:

o Function, operation and layout of the pneumatic supply system and its components
o Function, operation and layout of the cabin air-conditioning and pressurization systems and
their components

 Cabin protection systems including:

o Function and operation of crew and cabin therapeutic walk-round oxygen bottles
o Function and operation of crew and cabin oxygen storage, distribution and regulation
o Function and operation of crew and cabin emergency drop-down masks, distribution and
chemical generation
o Identification, function and layout of cabin and crew safety and emergency equipment.

Your report will also analyze and evaluate how the systems individually and collectively contribute to the
protection of the passengers and crew.
Part: 2
You will need to ensure that the report is easy to read, well-structured and uses the correct technical
terminology and any applicable engineering mathematical notations.
 An evaluation of the airframe fuel systems and components assessing their contribution to safe
flight. The evaluation must include:

o An analysis of fuel types and additives and the operation of the fuel system components and
fuel-tank layout during fuel-feed, fuel transfer, jettison, refueling and defueling modes.

 An evaluation of the airframe de-icing, anti-icing and fire-detection and extinguishing systems and
their components assessing their contribution to safe flight. The evaluation must include:

o An analysis of the function and operation of ice detection, pre-emptive anti-icing (electrical,
hot air, chemical) and reactive de-icing (pneumatic, electromagnetic-impulse chemical)
systems and components including applicable fluid types and the operation of the warning
system.

You have to present a PowerPoint presentation on the function and operation of Fire, heat and smoke
detectors, flight-deck and cabin-fire warnings, fire extinguishing systems and the nature of the
extinguishing agents relative to different classes of fire.
