Solution 1: A)
For building ‘A’:
Total number of flats = 1000
Number of unoccupied flats = 800
Number of occupied flats = 1000 – 800 = 200
Similarly,
Total Number of Number of
Building number of unoccupied occupied

Previous Year Question Paper

C 1400 1120 280

D 1600 1200 400
E 800 560 240
Required difference = 1000 – (280 + 400) = 320
Hence, option a.
Solution 2: E)
Required number of people = (200 × 2) + (240 × 3) = 400 + 720 = 1120
Hence, option e.
Solution 3: D)
Required ratio = 800:(240 + 240) = 800:480 = 5:3
Hence, option d.
Solution 4: A)
Required percentage = {1200/(1000 + 800)} × 100 = 66.67%
Hence, option a.
Solution 5: B)
Required average = {(200 + 240 + 280 + 400 + 240)/5} = 272
Hence, option b.
Solution 6: A)
Let the present ages of ‘A’ and ‘B’ be 6x years and 7x years, respectively
Therefore, 7x + 4 = 18
Or, 7x = 14
Or, x = 2
Sum of present ages of ‘A’ and ‘B’ = 6x + 7x = 26 years
Sum of present ages of ‘A’, “B’ and ‘C’ = 20 × 3 = 60 years
Therefore, present age of ‘C’ = 60 – 26 = 34 years
Hence, option a.
Solution 7: C)
Let the time of investment of ‘B’ be ‘x’ months
Ratio of profit shares of ‘A’ to ‘B’
= (3200 × 12):(2400 × x) = 16:x
According to the question,

49032737
Previous Year Question Paper

{x/(16 + x)} = 2880/8000

Or, {x/(16 + x)} = 9/25
Or, 25x = 144 + 9x
Or, 16x = 144
Or, x = 9
Therefore, ‘B’ invested his sum for 9 months.
Hence, option c.
Solution 8: D)
Speed of the train = 72 × (5/18) = 20 m/sec
Length of the train = 20 × 12 = 240 metres
Let the length of the platform be ‘x’ metres
Therefore, 240 + x = 20 × 25
Or, x = 500 – 240 = 260 metres
Hence, option d.
Solution 9: A)
Time taken by pipe ‘B’ to empty the tank = 16/0.5 = 32 hours
Let total capacity of the tank = 32 units
Efficiency of pipe ‘A’ = 32/16 = 2 units/hour
Efficiency of pipe ‘B’ = 32/32 = 1 unit/hour
Amount of tank filled in 8 hours by pipe ‘A’ = 2 × 8 = 16 units
Time taken by pipe ‘A’ and pipe ‘B’ together to fill the remaining tank =
{(32 – 16)/(2 – 1)} = 16 hours
Total time taken to fill the tank = 16 + 8 = 24 hours
Hence, option a.
Solution 10: C)
Circumference of the circle = 2 × (22/7) × 28 = 176 cm
Perimeter of the square = 176 – 32 = 144
Length of each side of the square = 144/4 = 36 cm
Therefore, area of the square = 362 = 1296 cm2
Hence, option c.

Previous Year Question Paper

Let the speed of the boat in still water and the speed of the current be ‘x’
km/hr and ‘y’ km/hr respectively.
Time taken by the boat to travel upstream = 30/60 = 0.5 hours
Time taken by the boat to travel downstream = 36/60 = 0.6 hours
Therefore, (x – y) = 15/0.5 = 30……. (1)
And, x + y = 24/0.6 = 40……… (2)
Adding equation (1) and (2), we get
Speed of the boat in still water = x = {(30 + 40)/2} = 35 km/hr
Speed of the current = 35 – 30 = 5 km/hr
Hence, option a.
Solution 12: B)
Initially, quantity of alcohol in the mixture = 85 × (11/17) = 55 litres
Quantity of water in the mixture = 85 – 55 = 30 litres
According to the question,
Quantity of water in the final mixture = 55 × (3/5) = 33 litres
Therefore, quantity of water added = 33 – 30 = 3 litres
Hence, option b.
Solution 13: E)
Let the cost price of the article be Rs. x
Therefore, marked price of the article = Rs. 1.25x
Selling price of the article = 0.88 × 1.25x = Rs. 1.1x
According to the question,
1.1x – x = 55
Or, 0.1x = 55
Or, x = 55/0.1 = 550
Therefore, cost price of the article = x = Rs. 550
Hence, option e.
Solution 14: A)
Let the maximum marks of the examination be ‘x’.

0.25x + 64 = 0.4x – 32
Or, 0.15x = 96
Or, x = 96/0.15 = 640
Therefore, maximum marks of the examination = 640
Hence, option a.
Solution 15: B)
Amount received by Rahul from scheme ‘A’ = {8000 × R × 2)/100} + 8000
= Rs. (8000 + 160R)
Amount received by Rahul from scheme ‘B’ = 0.125 × (8000 + 160R) +
(8000 + 160R) = Rs. 1.125(8000 + 160R)
Therefore, 1.125(8000 + 160R) – 8000 = 3700
Or, 8000 + 160R = 11700/1.125
Or, 160R = 10400 – 8000
Or, R = 2400/160 = 15
Hence, option b.
Solution 16: A)
Total number of students in the class = 500
Number of students involved dancing = 0.2 × 500 = 100
Number of boys involved in dancing = 100 × (3/10) = 30
Number of girls involved in dancing = 100 – 30 = 70
Let the number of boys involved in photography be ‘x’
Therefore, number of girls involved in photography = 0.875x
Total number of students involved in photography = 1.875x
Total number of students involved in singing = 1.875x/0.6 = 3.125x
Therefore, 3.125x 1.875x = 500 – 100
Or, 5x = 400
Or, x = 80
Therefore, total number of students involved in singing = 3.125x = 250
Number of boys involved in singing = {(250 50)/2} = 150
Number of girls involved in singing = 250 – 150 = 100
Number of students involved in photography = 1.875x = 150
Number of boys involved in photography = 80
