Introduction
In recent years, the increasing prevalence of online gaming has become a significant
concern, particularly among the adolescent population. As digital technologies continue
to advance, young individuals are increasingly drawn to online gaming as a form of
entertainment and social interaction. While online gaming can offer various benefits,
such as improved cognitive skills and teamwork, it has also raised concerns regarding
its potential negative impact, particularly when excessive gaming leads to addiction.
This phenomenon of online gaming addiction has become more pronounced, with
studies suggesting that it can interfere with daily responsibilities, including academic
performance (Prakasini Satapathy 2024).
The rapid rise in the use of the internet has profoundly impacted many aspects of daily
life, with online gaming emerging as one of the most significant changes. Online
gaming, which allows players to engage with others across the globe through the
internet, has become a popular pastime among youth, especially students. While it
serves as a source of entertainment and relaxation, it has also given rise to issues like
addiction, particularly among Grade 10 Star students at General Santos City National
High School.
One of the main concerns is that many students spend hours on end playing online
games, neglecting their academic responsibilities. Popular games often include
competitive elements, leading to prolonged gaming sessions. Students may find
themselves unable to limit their gaming time, which can interfere with their ability to
complete schoolwork, prepare for exams, and participate in extracurricular activities.
Excessive gaming has significant negative impacts on academic performance, primarily
due to a lack of focus and reduced time dedicated to studying. As students immerse
themselves in gaming, their academic responsibilities take a back seat, leading to
declining grades and poor academic outcomes (Griffiths, 2010).
This study aims to examine the effect of online gaming addiction on the academic
performance of Grade 10 Star students of General Santos City National High School.

understanding of how online gaming habits, when they verge on addiction, may
influence students' academic achievements. Additionally, it aims to provide insights into
possible interventions or strategies to mitigate the negative effects of online gaming on
students' education, helping ensure that they can balance their leisure activities with
their academic responsibilities.
