Chapter 1
Background of the Study
Gottfried & Kirksey (2018) stated that, previous research overwhelmingly shows that school
absenteeism is negatively associated with students’ academic achievement. Gott fried (2021)
also said that studies have found that children who are more frequently absent in early
kindergarten obtain lower working memory and cognitive flexibility scores in early
childhood. In general, missing students miss out on teacher-led sessions, peer interactions,
and other opportunities that could foster their learning and development (Kirksey, 2019),
which could have a negative impact on student accomplishment. But being absent from
school can occur for a number of reasons, such as truancy, illness, or vacations with family.
There is a paucity of research addressing the extent to which relationships between
absenteeism and achievement vary by these individual reasons, despite the fact that these
particular reasons for absence from school can each be differentially connected with kids’
academic achievement (Hancocket al., 2018). As stated in this research, absenteeism might
have a negative impact on student accomplishment.
Absenteeism, according to Merriam-Webster dictionary means chronic absence. In the
context of the school it is the habitual or intentional failure from going to school. It cannot be
denied that every now and then, students may miss some school activities and lessons. But it
becomes a problem if the student will be away from school for many days.
According to Dinola et al. (2019), absenteeism can be lessen by the help of the teachers,
friends, family and most especially by the students themselves. Absenteeism is a threat in
success. The moment you absent is the moment you miss an opportunity. Attending classes
every day has an impact in the performance of every student. In grading system, attendance is
highly important because it will be the basis of the students status in class. In school,
everyday there is a new lesson and once you skip the class you can no longer get to know
what you missed. Absenteeism is one of the major problems of the teachers, because if the
student missed a lesson it will have an impact to their performance and to their capability as a
teacher.
The purpose of the study is to determine the low self-esteem, social isolation, and students-
teacher relationship, specifically their academic performance, failure-related anxiety of Senior
High School in Gueguesangen Integrated School in order to understand the relationship
between academic performance and their abseenteism.
Statement of the Problem
This study generally aims to determine whether the SHS students Absenteeism
and significant relationship with their Academic Performance in Gueguesangen
Integated School.
Specifically this study shall seek answer to the following questions:
1. What is the average frequency of the SHS students in the 1st Quarter?
2. What is the academic performance of the Senior High School in terms of their
general average in the 1st Quarter?
3. Is there a significant relationship between the frequency of absences and the
academic performance in the 1st Quarter of Senior High School students?
Significance of the Study
This study is focused on the relationship between absenteeism and their academic
performance of the SHS of Gueguesangen Integrated School.
More specifically, this study shall be beneficial to the various groups of people,
Students, This study will the help of the study. The students can have an information on how
they will be affected if they skin class. This study will give them knowledge about what's
good it could bring if they attend the class.
Teachers, This study may serve as their guide to know the causes why a student is being
absent and through this study, they can encourage their students to attend their classes.
Parents, This study through parents can get information about bad effects of absenteeism to
their child specially in the class , The will allow parents to guide their children in their
studies.
Future Researches, This study will be useful reference for the researcher who would plan to
make only study about absenteeism and academic performance of studies.
Scope and Delimitation
This study is a correlational research focusing on the relationship between SHS
students absenteeism and their academic perfomance in Gueguesangen Integrated
School in the first semester of the school year 2023-2024.
Furthermore, the study only randomly selected 30 respondents out 50 SHS
students to participate in the survey. All of the randomly selected participants
claimed that they had experienced academic performance. The researchers will
conduct a survey by means of answering questions at the same time getting
information by the use of the academic records and attendance records from their
instructor.

REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE AND CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
Related Literature
Local
Ferdie G. Salao (2021) claims that the socioeconomic status of the students' families
is the primary cause of absenteeism at Alonzo High School. The majority of students
chose to work in order to support themselves and their families and pay for school. In
contrast, students who showed signs of truancy were primarily influenced by their
peers (the environment). Every student has the potential to be influenced by another
student to engage in undesirable behaviours. The reasons why high school students
may miss school are explored in depth in this article. It emphasizes the significance of
understanding the underlying causes of absenteeism rather than just the symptoms. It
is essential that the school and network provide college students with a supportive
environment that encourages learning and development. The chances of high school
students succeeding are significantly increased by providing them with the resources
and assistance they require. Only then will we be able to begin addressing the issue of
absenteeism and ensure that every student has the opportunity to receive a high-
quality education.
According to Dimaisip, E. (2019), the most common reason for public school students
to miss school is poverty or financial difficulty. Additional explanations for their
absence include the following: distance from school, health issues, and family
problems The least likely reason for their absence is a negative attitude toward their
studies. This statement is true. Poverty is a major issue for public college students
without teachers, and it needs to be addressed. Absences can also be caused by other
factors like distance from school, health issues, and problems with one's own family.
In addition, it is unlikely that students' absences are primarily caused by a negative
attitude toward their studies. If you want to ensure that every student has access to the
education they need to succeed, you must first recognize and address the root causes
of absences.
According to the findings of the study that was conducted by Artango and Gallato
(2020), they came to the conclusion that truancy is practiced by students in Grade 7
regardless of sex, age, family status and size, monthly income of the family, education
of parents, source of income, and distance from home to the school. Additionally,
there is a serious problem with the proportion of truant students that must be
addressed. In addition, it can be deduced that truancy is largely caused by students,
their families, and the school. Because truancy is a serious problem that needs to be
avoided, this is relevant to our research. Nowadays, some students skip school and put
other things ahead of school without their parents’ permission.Their academic
performance suffers as a result, and this issue must be resolved.
Foreign
Regular attendance at school is essential to academic performance for both students
and teachers. Excessive absence from school is linked to poor academic performance,
hence the success and degrees of educational advancement of any academic
institution and all enrolled students are directly impacted by both teachers and
students' attendance at school.
According to Christopher A. Kearney & Joshua Childs (2022), school
attendance/absence(SA/A) is a key indicator of adolescent health and development,
but educational policy and health-based practices in this area are not a simple
indicator. This article summarizes these issues and outlines strategies for improving
SA/A data and better defining problematic chronictruancy. Findings include a focus
on unique local conditions and student/family situations to improve the use of SA/A
data. Further leverage sophisticated sensitive data analysis and assessment strategies
to better define problematic chronic absenteeism across geographic regions and
student groups. This includes moving from one-size-fits-all approaches to effective
and purposeful policies and practices, better consideration of the special
circumstances affecting institutions and families, and a tiered support model for
enrollment issues. This article highlights the importance of improving enrollment data
and defining problematic absenteeism int he next phase of education policy and
health-based practice.
Conceptual Framework
Figure 1 Below illustrates the conceptual framework of the research. The
paradigm presents the variables that will be considered in the research.
Academic Absenteeism of
Performance SHS students
Fig.1 The Conceptual Framework of the Study
The illustration shows the dependent and independent variables in this study.
The first box contains the academic performance of SHS students, which serves as an
independent variable this variable is seen to have a hypothesized relationship with the
second box, which contains the absenteeism of SHS students. This hypothesized
relationship is represented by the two-healed arrow connecting both variables to
determine the relationship between Academic performance and absenteeism of SHS
students
Research Hypothesis(es)
Null hypothesis: There is no significant relationship between absenteeism and
their academic performance.
Alternative hypothesis: There is significant relationship between absenteeism
and their academic performance.
Definition of Terms
Absenteeism: This refers to the regular truancy of a child
Academic Performance: This refers to the extent to which a student’s teachers or
institution has achieved their short- and long-term education goal.
Gueguesangen Integrated School: The refers to the location where the researches
conduct their study.

METHODOLOGY
Research Design
This study is quantitative research, specifically, the study uses a corelational
research design in order to ascertain whether there is a relationship between the
absenteeism of SHS and their academic performance.
According to Voxco (2021) Correlational research is a non-experimental method
that uses statistical analysis to evaluate the relationship between variables, without
considering extraneous factors. It is commonly used in market research to identify
patterns, trends, or insights between consumer behavior and market variables like
advertisements and discounts.
The Sample
The target population of the study are the SHS during the first semester of the
academic year (2023-2024) of Gueguesangen Integrated School in Mangaldan,
Pangasinan. These students belong to three different strands of the SHS program
namely: General Academic Strand (GAS), Accountancy Business and Management
(ABM), Techinical Vocational Livelihood (TVL).
With population size of 222 students, the research will consider a sample of
106 respondents determined using Slovin’s Formula for computing sample size with a
five percent margin of error. These sample shall be randomly selected through
stratified random sampling with the SHS strands being used to define groups and to
randomly determine the samples.
The Instrument(s)
The questionnaire is an often used as observational device for collecting
personal data and opinion it provides a way to collect personal information from
subjects that may not be readily obtainable using other methods. Questionnaire
provide structured responses, we used checklist to answer the survey questionnaire.
Every respondent is instructed to respond to each item with one of five possible
answer coded 1-5, with 5 representing the highest that stands for always and 1 being
the lowest, that stands for never. The questionnaire was divided into three parts. The
researchers personally submitted the questionnaires to the respondents and assure
them of confidentiality to be able to obtain honesty in the respondent's answer.
Data Collection Procedure
The process for gathering the needed data in the study is describe the following steps.
1.The researcher shall seek the permission of the instruments that will be
adopted in this study.
2.The researchers will secure permission of the school to obtain a list of SHS
students from which the samples will be selected. Also a permission to conduct
data collection will be sought from the concerned officials of the school.
3.The questionnaires shall be distributed to the selected samples during vacant
time with a permission from the class adviser and the note of approval of the
school.
4.Questionnaire shall be retrieved the same day as they were given to ensure a
higher percentage of questionnaires.
Plan for Data Analysis
To answer the questions presented under the statement of the problem the
following statistical tools with be employed.
1. Frequency will be used to determine how many absences does Seinor High School
students in every quarter
2. Weighted mean will be computed to represent the responses of each repondents to
the questionnaire in their academic performance.
3. The Person product Moment Correlation Coefficient will be used to determine the
degree of relationship between SHS students absenteeism and their academic
performance.
