TITLE OF THE COURSE: Studio Module 1 – An Introduction to Studio

DURATION: Half-day

PREREQUISITES: No prior knowledge of the translation environment or tool needed.

COURSE OBJECTIVE: After completing this course participants will be able to use Studio to

translate a document in their respective Language Unit. They will be able to open a translation

job from Studio Twist, translate the document in SDL Studio and save their work before

sending it for post-processing.

TARGET GROUP: This course is intended for translators and translation assistants in DG

TRAD who are not familiar with Studio and who, therefore, need to acquire the elementary

skills which will enable them to effectively use the tool either to start translating documents

in their units or to undertake pre and/or post-processing tasks which require the use of

Studio. It is also especially suitable for newcomers who have no prior knowledge of the

Language Units' translation environment, the translation process and the tools employed for

translation.

CONTENTS:
 How Computer-Assisted Translation works

 storing translation units in translation memories for future reuse


 differentiating between source and target segments
 marking translation units with value fields
 How to work with a SPA package
 understanding how project-based translation works
 understanding the contents of a package

 recognising the different file extensions


 How the translation workflow in DG Trad looks like
 receiving a Feuille de Route (FdR) with a translation job
 understanding what processes are done automatically by SPA and what is done by
the individual Language Units
 understanding how Euramis, DocEP and Studio Twist are used during the PRE and
POS stages

 How to translate a document


 opening a SPA project from Studio Twist
 familiarising oneself with the SDL Studio environment
 opening and translating an *.xliff file in Editor view
 enabling and using translation memories for different purposes
 checking the TM value fields

 understanding the different segment status icons and translation origin icons
 activating, deactivating, translating and confirming segments
 deleting the content of a segment
 copying the content of the source segment to the target segment
 understanding how matches are presented in the Translation Results window and
copying a match into the target segment in the Editor window

 running a concordance search and copying part of a segment from the


Concordance Search window to the target segment in the Editor window
 understanding the document structure column
 using shortcuts in Studio

 auto-propagating identical segments


 inserting placeables, footnotes and hyperlinks
