Tutorial-5
1. Explain the term scattering cross-section.
2. Briefly explain center of mass system and lab system for scattering experiments. Show
that 𝜃𝐶.𝑀. = 2 𝜃𝐿𝑎𝑏 .
3. From the semi-classical approach, show that for n-p scattering scattering cross-section at
low energies only contribution is due to l=0? Obtain the approximate energy for which
l=1starts its contribution.
4. Explain the low energy n-p scattering cross-section graph shown below. Discuss the
important features in this graph.

5. In neutron proton scattering with l=0, show that the scattered wavefunction 𝑈(𝑟) is given
by 𝑈(𝑟) = 𝐶 𝑆𝑖𝑛(𝑘2 𝑟 + 𝛿) when we consider scattering potential to be square well type
and 𝑘2 is the wave number of scattered wave and 𝛿 is the phase shift due to scattering.
6. Briefly discuss the singlet and triplet cross-section for n-p scattering at low energies.
7. Assume the theoretical triplet cross section as 4.6 barn, estimate the cross section for the
singlet scattering, if the total cross-section is 20.4.
8. The graph shown below is for n-p scattering in center of mass frame at high energies. What
information one can draw from data?
9. What is One Pion Exchange Model? How many types are there? Give all possible
combination for emission and absorption, where pion exchanges are possible.
10. Briefly discuss meson theory of nuclear force. Using uncertainty principle and
phenomenological arguments, obtain an expression for the Yukawa potential between
nucleons.
11. The electromagnetic and gravitational interactions are long range, however nuclear and
weak interactions are short range. Give reason why?
12. Using the uncertainty principle and assuming nuclear force is due to the exchange
particle between two nucleons is within 1.5 fm, find out the rest mass energy of
exchange particle?
