WEEK 7 PPT in Stat and Prob

The document outlines the concepts of discrete probability distribution and mean in statistics, emphasizing the requirements for completing assignments and exams. It provides examples of constructing probability distributions for coin tosses and dice rolls, along with conditions that probabilities must satisfy. Additionally, it includes a quiz for students to apply their understanding by constructing a probability distribution for coin tosses, computing the mean, and drawing a histogram.

WEEK 7

DISCRETE PROBABILITY

DISTRIBUTION
Ms. Sheila Mae Salvaleon
Reminders:
A. You need to complete your Form 201
because it is also requirement for FINAL
EXAM.

B. In showing your solution in Statistics and

Probability:

1. You should write your COMPLETE

NAME AND SECTION.
Reminders:
2. Box your final answer.

3. Make sure in taking the picture,

-it must be clear
-not reflected by the flash
-in vertical form
-you can take a 1 pic only
OBJECTIVES Illustrate and solve
probability distribution
and the mean.

Discuss the concept

of probability
distribution of a
discrete random
variable.
Probability Distribution

The probability distribution of a discrete

random variable X is a list of each possible
value of X together with the probability that X
takes that value in one trial of the experiment.
Probability Distribution
The probabilities in the probability distribution of a
random variable X must satisfy the following two
conditions:

• Each probability P(x)P(x) must be between 0 and 1:

0 ≤ P(x) ≤1 (Equation 1)

• The sum of all the possible probabilities is 1:

∑ P(x) = 1 (Equation 2)
Example 1
A fair coin is tossed twice. Let X be the number of
heads that are observed.

a. Construct the probability distribution of X.

b. Find the probability that at least one head is

observed.

the number of dots on the top faces.

a. Construct the probability distribution of X for a

The Mean
The mean (also called the "expectation value"
or "expected value") of a discrete random
variable XX is the number

μ = E(X) = Σx P(x) (Equation 3)

MEAN
QUIZ
Supposed 3 coins are tossed. Let Y be the random
variable representing the number of heads. Do the
following:

1. Construct the probability distribution.

2. Compute the mean.
3. Draw the histogram.
