Design of Static loads:
1. Determine the combined stresses at the extreme fibres of cross section X – X of C – clamp
shown in figures.

2. A 65 mm diameter rod carries a load of 10 kN. The rod is also subjected to torsional load
of 80 Nm. Determine the max. Normal & Shear Stresses. (Figure 4).

Stress Concentration Factor:
3. A stepped shaft of circular cross section shown in figure is made of 20C8 steel.
Determine the value of ‘d’ and fillet radius, so that the max. Stress will be limited to a
ratio corresponding to FOS of 2.5. (Figure 5)

4. A flat bar shown in figure is subjected to an axial load of 100 kN. Assuming that the
stress in the bar is limited to 200 MPa, determine the thickness of the bar. (Figure 6)

Design of Fatigue loading:
5. The non rotating shaft shown in figure 7 is subjected to a load ‘F’ varying from 4000N to
12000N. The shaft material has σu = 600 MPa, σen = 300 MPa, The correction co-efficients for
surface, size and load are 0.8,0.85 and 0.9 respectively. Find the dimension ‘D’ for a safety factor
of 3.5 and notch sensitivity index of 0.9.
Combined Fatigue Loading:
6. A steel Shaft is subjected to a bending moment that varies from 100Nm to 200 Nm and
transmits 10 kW at 150 rpm. The torque varies over a range of ± 40%. The shaft is made
of steel whose σy = 400 MPa and σen = 300 MPa. Surface correction factor is 0.9, Size factor is
1.2, FOS = 5, SCF = 1.94. Determine the diameter of shaft for infinite life.
