Universal Immunization Programme (UIP)
Introduction:
The Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) was launched in 1985 by the Ministry of
Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) to protect children and pregnant women from vaccine-
preventable diseases (VPDs).
It is one of the largest public health programs in the world, covering over 26 million
newborns and 29 million pregnant women every year.
Objectives of UIP:
1. Provide free vaccines to all children and pregnant women.
2. Achieve 100% immunization coverage across India.
3. Reduce child mortality by preventing deadly infections.
4. Eliminate vaccine-preventable diseases like measles, polio, and tetanus.
5. Strengthen the cold chain system for safe vaccine storage.
Vaccines Provided Under UIP:
For Children (0-5 years)
1. BCG – Protects against tuberculosis (TB).
2. Hepatitis B – Prevents liver infection.
3. Pentavalent Vaccine – Protects against diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus (DPT), Hepatitis
B, and Hib infections.
4. OPV (Oral Polio Vaccine) & IPV (Injectable Polio Vaccine) – Prevents polio.
5. Rotavirus Vaccine – Prevents diarrhea.
6. PCV (Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine) – Prevents pneumonia & meningitis.
7. Measles-Rubella (MR) Vaccine – Protects against measles and rubella.
8. JE (Japanese Encephalitis) Vaccine – Given in high-risk districts.
9. DPT Booster & MMR Vaccine – Given in preschool age to maintain immunity.
For Pregnant Women
1. TT (Tetanus Toxoid) Vaccine – Prevents tetanus in mother and newborn.
2. Td (Tetanus-Diphtheria) Vaccine – Replaces TT in some areas.
Functioning of UIP:
1. Routine Immunization (RI)
Vaccines are provided free of cost at government hospitals, PHCs, and Anganwadi
centers.
ASHA workers and ANMs (Auxiliary Nurse Midwives) mobilize parents for
vaccinations.
2. Strengthening Cold Chain Infrastructure
Cold storage facilities, vaccine carriers, and ice-lined refrigerators (ILRs) are used to
store vaccines at the right temperature.
3. Digital Monitoring of Vaccination
U-WIN Platform tracks child vaccination records digitally.
Outcomes of UIP:
✔️Polio-free India (since 2014).
✔️Maternal & Neonatal Tetanus eliminated (2015).
✔️Significant decline in child mortality.
