ENEL3EM – EM THEORY
TUTORIAL SHEET NO.2 (ON SMITH CHART)

1. A 30-m long lossless transmission line with Zo=50  operating at 2 MHz is

terminated with a load ZL=60+j40 . If the phase velocity u=0.6c on the line, use the
Smith chart to determine:
i. The reflection coefficient, 0.351656o)
ii. The standing wave ratio, S (2.1)
iii. The input impedance (normalized zin=0.47+j0.035; Zin=23.5+j1.75)

2. A load, ZL=100+j150  is connected to a lossless line with characteristic impedance,

Zo=75 . Determine, using the Smith Chart:
i. The reflection coefficient (0.65940o).
ii. The VSWR (4.865)
iii. The load admittance YL (normalized yin=0.23-j0.35; YL=3.04-j4.67mS)
iv. Zin at 0.4 from the load (zin=0.3+j0.63; Zin=22.5+j47.25)
v. The locations of Vmax and Vmin from the load if the line is 0.6 long
(Vmax is located at 0.055 from load; Vmin is located at 0.3055 from
load.)
vi. Zin at the generator. (normalized zin=1.88-j2.2; Zin=135-j165 )

3. A 70- lossless line has a standing wave ratio of 1.6 and an angle of the reflection
coefficient, =300o. If the line is 0.6 wavelengths long, obtain:
i. The reflection coefficient (0.23300o).
ii. The load impedance (ZL=80.5-j33.6 ).
iii. The input impedance (ZL=47.6-j17.5 ).
iv. The distance of the first voltage minimum from the load (/6)

4. A lossless 60- line is terminated by a 60+j60- load. Using the Smith chart,
determine:

i. The reflection coefficient (0.44763o)

ii. The standing wave ratio (2.6)
iii. If Zin=120-j60 , determine, in wavelengths, how far the load is from
the generator (0.1251+4n))
iv. Input impedance at the voltage maximum and voltage minimum
(Zmax=157 , Zmin=22.9 )
v. How far the first voltage maximum is from the load (0.086)

5. An antenna connected to a 150- lossless line produces a VSWR of 2.6. If

measurements indicate that the voltage maxima are 120 cm apart and that the last
maximum is 40 cm from the antenna, determine, using the Smith Chart:
i. The operating frequency
ii. The antenna impedance
iii. The reflection coefficient. Assume vp=c.

6. With an unknown load connected to a slotted air line, a VSWR=2.0 is recorded, and
minima are found at 11 cm, 19 cm, … on the scale. When the load is replaced by a
short circuit, the minima are at 16 cm, 24 cm, … If the characteristic impedance of
the line is 50 , determine:
i. The guide wavelength (=16 cm)
ii. The operating frequency (f=1.875 GHz)
iii. The load impedance (zl=1.4+j0.75; ZL=70+j37.5 )

7. The following measurements were taken using the slotted line technique: with the
unknown load ZL, a VSWR=1.8, and Vmax occurred at 23 cm, 35.5 cm, …. With a
short circuit load, Vmax occurred at 25 cm, 37.5 cm, …. If Zo=50 , determine ZL
(32.5-j17.5 ).

8. A quarter-wave transformer is required to match a 120- load to a 75- line.

Determine the characteristic impedance of the quarter-wave section (Ans: 95 ).

a shorted stub. Determine:
i. The required stub admittance (ys=±j1.04; Ys=j10.4 mS)
ii. The distance between the stub and the antenna (dA=0.36;
dB=0.032)
iii. The stub length (lA=0.122; lB=0.378)

11. A 75- lossless line is to be matched to a 100-j80- load with a shorted stub.
Determine:
i. The stub length (lA=0.126; lB=0.374)
ii. The stub position from the load (dA=0.0.093; dB=0.272)
