SPORTS

AN INTRODUCTION
Sports
- is an activity that requires physical actions
and skills where individuals or teams
compete under a set of rules.
Sport is classified into:
• Individual sports
• Dual sports
• Team sports
Individual sports are played by one participant on each competing
side

Dual Sports are played by two competing pairs

Team Sports are played by three or more players

What is the difference of individual/dual
sports vs. team sports?
• Individual sports
foster a higher amount of discipline, self-
confidence, focus, and passion
• Team sports
many variables are considered to
determine the success or failure of the team. It
depends on the collective effort of all its players
Individual/
Dual Sports
Table Tennis
- A ball game similar in principle to lawn
tennis and played on a flat table divided into
two equal courts by a net fixed across its width
at the middle.
-In most countries it is very highly organized as
a competitive sport, especially in Europe and
Asia, particularly in China and Japan.
History
The game was invented in England in the early days of
the 20th century and was originally called Ping-Pong,
a trade name. The name table tennis was adopted in
1921–22 when the old Ping-Pong Association formed in
1902 was revived. The original association had broken
up about 1905, though apparently the game continued to
be played in parts of England outside London and by the
1920s was being played in many countries.

of the sport can be traced to the old game battledore
and shuttlecock, which was played in ancient
Greece, China, and India. The game was taken from
India to England, where it was first played
in Gloucestershire, at the country estate of the 9th
duke of Beaufort, Henry Somerset, about 1873. The
sport is named for this Badminton estate.

Basketball
Basketball is a game played between two
teams of five players each on a rectangular
court, usually indoors. Each team tries to
score by tossing the ball through the
opponent’s goal, an elevated horizontal
hoop and net called a basket.
History
- invented in the late 1800s
- the game was created by James Naismith,
a physical education instructor, on or about
December 1, 1891, at the International Young
Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) Training
School (now Springfield College) in Springfield,
Massachusetts.
Volleyball
- game played by two teams, usually
of six players on a side, in which the
players use their hands to bat
a ball back and forth over a high net,
trying to make the ball touch the
court within the opponents’ playing
area before it can be returned.
History
Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan,
physical director of the Young Men’s Christian
Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Massachusetts. It was
designed as an indoor sport for businessmen who found
the new game of basketball too vigorous. Morgan called the
sport “mintonette,” until a professor from Springfield
College in Massachusetts noted the volleying nature of play
and proposed the name of “volleyball.”
